Lessons in Chemistry

A Novel

By Bonnie Garmus
Narrated by: Miranda Raison, Bonnie Garmus & Pandora Sykes
Length: 11 hours 55 minutes

If you enjoyed When Women Were Dragons, then you’ll love Lessons in Chemistry.

“Character-driven and quirky, this book made me angry at what Elizabeth faces, yet at the same time, the fact that she faces it with such aplomb that it also filled me with joy to witness her journey. Reading this one at the same time as When Women Were Dragons made me wonder if Elizabeth would be dragoning pretty soon ;) but this one is set in the real world, where instead she used her very human, very brilliant brain to challenge the status quo. ”

Fourth Wing: Book #1

By Rebecca Yarros
Narrated by: Rebecca Soler & Teddy Hamilton
Length: 20 hours 47 minutes

Fourth Wing

“I have never in my life been on such an extraordinary roller coaster of emotions as I have with this book. I have never smiled this much, cried so hard, or felt my heart beat so fast while reading. Dare I say? This is the best fantasy book I have ever read. It is deliciously dangerous, dark, and full of fire and blood, with strong and stubborn characters who fight daily to survive the dangers, deceptions, and enemies at the Basgiath War College. Oh! And dragons. Lots of dragons. WOW!!! I wait with bated breath until the next book is released. This book consumed my every thought. I. Could. Not. Stop. Reading.”

Yellowface

A Novel

By R. F. Kuang
Narrated by: Helen Laser
Length: 8 hours 38 minutes

Yellowface

“R.F. Kuang does it again! But honestly, who is surprised! Yellowface is full of terrible people doing terrible things, a horror of mundanity that makes you reconsider everyone around you. But mainly, you have June spiraling out of control in a similar manner to the main character in a tell-tale heart, an unreliable narrator who reliably tells on herself in every single sentence. I was on edge the entire time, desperate for something to go right for someone who wasn't the main character - one of my favorite kind of things in fiction. Yellowface is brilliant, and a stark reminder that we all need to be better.”

I'm Glad My Mom Died

By Jennette McCurdy
Narrated by: Jennette McCurdy
Length: 6 hours 25 minutes

If you enjoyed Dancing at the Pity Party, then you’ll love I'm Glad My Mom Died.

“Equal parts hilarious and devastating, Jennette McCurdy reviews her acting career with stark clarity, irony to fill your soul, and a presence of control over the uncontrollable. I'm Glad My Mom Died reflects on undiagnosed narcissism with a mother forcing her child to live out her mother's dreams as a childhood actor. The dichotomy of gratefulness and criticism take center stage in this beautiful memoir read by the author with honesty, pain, and a performance that will resonate with you for months to come. Please listen to this.”

Witch King

By Martha Wells
Narrated by: Eric Mok
Length: 13 hours 9 minutes

Witch King

“A stunning new fantasy from a fantastic author! This story is filled with incredible world-building, a complex magic system, friendship, trust, and betrayal, and it explores what it takes to win a revolution and then destroy it. Wells' writing makes you feel instantly connected to the characters. The characters themselves are powerful, inhuman, and dry-humored but deeply connected to each other. This is a great fantasy filled with plenty of action, wit, and charm. The audiobook reader did an incredible job bringing Kai-Enna to life and expressing the character's emotions through his conversations.”

The Covenant of Water

By Abraham Verghese
Narrated by: Abraham Verghese
Length: 31 hours 16 minutes

If you enjoyed Cutting for Stone, then you’ll love The Covenant of Water.

“Seven decades (in book time!) and more than 700 pages later, I closed The Covenant of Water, the story of a family haunted by drownings. Abraham Verghese has written a spellbinding novel set in a Christian community in India. Verghese draws, as he did in the other two books, on his vast knowledge of medicine, and exhibits his ability to delve deep into character and setting. In the past six months, I have left two novels of more than 500 pages unfinished, but I read this one to the very end, moved by the quest of three generations of a family trying to save themselves from destiny and solve the mystery of their affliction. This book is a stunner, and it is sure to be high on the list when awards are given out this year. ”

Length: 15 hours 6 minutes

Hello Beautiful (Oprah's Book Club)

“As a bookseller, it’s common to read through books at a breakneck pace; always on to the next tale, the next genre, the next page-turner. When you come a cross a book so achingly beautiful as Hello Beautiful...time slows. Or, you wish it would. I wanted to spend YEARS within this story. I adored the complexity AND simplicity of the sisters’ relationships with each other. I Have Some Questions for You

A Novel

By Rebecca Makkai
Narrated by: Julia Whelan & JD Jackson
Length: 14 hours 3 minutes

I Have Some Questions for You

“A scorching, compelling read, this is a calling out of violence against women: how it's reported, poorly prosecuted, lightly punished, sensationalized, ignored, held against us, and so deeply ingrained in our culture. A New England prep school is the perfect setting for this collision of podcasts, old secrets hidden deep, racism, sexism, growing pains, and the lenses we have, shed, and change as we grow. Julia Whelan's narration is, as always, phenomenal. I could not stop listening - this is a 10/10 for me.”

This Is How You Lose The Time War

“Agents for opposite sides of a war without an end or beginning find themselves drawn to one another. It starts as a little deadly competition, but it quickly becomes clear that it's more than just fascination. Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone work together like steak and a fine wine. Some of the most beautiful prose, and two of the most complex characters ever written, This is How You Lose the Time War is a tragic love story wrapped in science fiction. “If you’re a huge audiobook fan like me, you must listen to Daisy Jones & The Six. The book is written as an oral history and is read by an entire cast of top notch readers and actors. I felt like I was listening to an amazing 70s rock & roll documentary, it felt so real that I even looked up the band online to make sure it was truly fiction. This book is about a band’s rise to stardom and everything that comes with it: sex, drugs, rock & roll, smashing of egos, the pain of creativity, and amazing song writing. ”

The House in the Cerulean Sea

By TJ Klune
Narrated by: Daniel Henning
Length: 12 hours 12 minutes

If you enjoyed 1984, then you’ll love The House in the Cerulean Sea.

“This was a wholesome squeal of a novel that I ADORED! It had so much hype around it so I was wary but it immediately drew me in and wouldn't let me go until I finished. I opted for audio since it seemed that was the only way I was going to squeeze it in with my giant TBR list. Once I started, I literally changed my activities to better fit the listening of this book—more knitting, less TV, longer walks, and antisocial behavior. The narrator, Daniel Henning, perfectly encapsulated the whimsical nature of Linus Baker and his mysterious Level 4 security assignment to the island of Marysas. Though this book is entirely its own, it had vibes that reminded me of 1984 meets The Umbrella Academy meets Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Klune imbues so much life into all his characters. The kids are so cute and sassy and I love this quasi-magical world that they exist in, despite the fact that it keeps them locked away in an orphanage. I love that themes of our own world are examined and questioned and that it has a happy ending. I highly recommend this fantastical novel to everyone! Any book that steals all my attention from start to finish is pure magic and should be cherished!”

Thank You For Listening

A Novel

By Julia Whelan
Narrated by: Julia Whelan
Length: 11 hours 15 minutes

Thank You For Listening

“Oh how I loved the absolutely and perfectly smart meta experience of listening to Julia Whelan narrate her story about an audiobook narrator and the world of audiobook production. Who doesn’t love an insider’s peek into a completely different world? I also enjoyed Whelan’s loving and sassy pokes at the world of romance books. This book falls into that perfect overlap between 'women’s fiction' and rom-com that seems to work so well for me. The development of a friendship (and perhaps some sexual tension….) between Sewanee and Brock, through their texting and emails worked for me. I was practically crying over their playfulness with each other involving an exchange of sexual innunendos....Sewanee's heartbreaking interactions with her beloved grandmother show the challenges of navigating the realities with an aging grandparent. Her own struggles with disfigurement are handled with grace and humor while also realistically addressing the trauma and life changes it caused. And of course, nothing rounds out a story for me like a cast of supporting character friends, and again, this did not disappoint.”

In the Lives of Puppets

By TJ Klune
Narrated by: Daniel Henning
Length: 15 hours 22 minutes

If you enjoyed The House in the Cerulean Sea, then you’ll love In the Lives of Puppets.

“Full disclosure: I’m a huge TJ Klune fan and predisposed to love everything he writes! In The Lives of Puppets has his signature humor, charm, and poignancy. At the center of this retelling of Pinocchio is a most lovable motley crew of one human, Victor, and his robot friends Rambo and Nurse Ratched. Klune often writes of themes around found family and misfits, relatable to readers whether or not you’re part of the LGBTQIA community. I’m head over heels in love with hilarious robot Rambo, a little vacuum desperate for love and belonging. Victor sets out on a hero’s quest with his crew and finds love along the way, except there are strings attached (pun intended). ”

Murder Your Employer

The McMasters Guide to Homicide

By Rupert Holmes
Narrated by: Neil Patrick Harris & Simon Vance
Length: 14 hours 13 minutes

Murder Your Employer

“From the first paragraph I was enamored with this sardonic, witty, ridiculous premise and book. A secret specialized school where the students either graduate as well-trained murderers or in a body bag, told in detailed journal entries and meta book-within-a-book asides. It's such a fun time, and I had trouble putting it down for paltry things like food and sleep. It's been a long while since I've fallen in love with the way a book was written. There was not one single word that was unnecessary or out of place. If you like piña coladas and murder, this is the perfect book for you (read the author bio!).”

“I loved this nautical true story of mutiny on the high seas. The men lived by such a strict code. What is to be done when the captain loses the confidence and respect of some of his crew? In a culture and atmosphere where your rank determines whether your account of events is to be read, let alone believed, it makes for a very interesting page-turner. Grann never disappoints. He brings a similar level of intrigue to this story, that was present in Killers of the Flower Moon. GOOD GOOD GOOD!! I listened via Libro.fm and found it to be highly entertaining.”

Tress of the Emerald Sea

“This felt like reading one of my childhood adventure/fairytale books, like warmth and nostalgia and absurdity all wrapped together. I loved the wildly unfamiliar setting and the quirky, loveable characters. A small-town girl turns pirateer to rescue her love from a sorceress, and to do so has to sail over oceans of... moon dust? Definitely a must-read. ”

Horse

A Novel

By Geraldine Brooks
Narrated by: James Fouhey, Lisa Flanagan, Graham Halstead, Katherine Littrell & Michael Obiora
Length: 14 hours 5 minutes

Horse

“This book centers on Lexington, often considered the greatest horse in history. But this book is much more than the story of a horse. Brooks writes of slavery, the Civil War, academia, art and publishing, love and loyalty, and racism in history and today. I loved the bond between Jarret, an enslaved boy, and Lexington. I will be thinking of this book for quite some time.”

The Secret Book of Flora Lea

“This novel is The Secret Garden meets Goodnight Mr. Tom meets Gone Girl. I loved it! I've been listening to this as an audiobook on my morning walks and I've been having to take afternoon and evening walks as well, because I just can't wait to hear more. I love the thought of a magical world only the sisters share with their stories. Patti Callahan Henry just captures that wonder of childhood so well. This book is an easy handsell and one of my favorites so far this year!”

The Vanishing Half

A Novel

By Brit Bennett
Narrated by: Shayna Small
Length: 11 hours 33 minutes

The Vanishing Half

“Within the first few pages of The Vanishing Half, I knew I was reading something special. In this slow-burn novel, twins Desiree and Stella grow up in Mallard, a small black community in segregated Louisiana that prides itself on the lightness of its people’s skin. At sixteen, the twins flee from Mallard after their mother pulls them out of school to work cleaning white people’s houses, sacrificing the familiarity of home, the safety of their community, and the predictable trajectory of their lives. In New Orleans, the twins begin their new lives together, but eventually Stella takes off on her own, choosing to live the rest of her life “passing” as white; Desiree marries a dark-skinned man, has a child who looks like him, and ends up living back in Mallard. The consequences of the twins’ life choices unfold throughout the book, from the 1950s to the 1990s, and include the lives (and perspectives) of their daughters, Kennedy and Jude. The Vanishing Half is a fascinating story about family relationships, identity, and belonging, and I savored every page.”

A Deadly Education

A Novel
The Scholomance: Book #1

By Naomi Novik
Narrated by: Anisha Dadia
Length: 10 hours 58 minutes

A Deadly Education

“The audio narration perfectly captures the prickly and snarky El, a lifelong misfit and outcast, as she explains her precarious position in this highly competitive and deadly magical boarding school (think, Hogwarts meets the Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies). In explaining the history and design of the school, El provides us an unexpected and smart commentary on wealth, class and privilege. With no social skills, she has no friends but this is not high on her priority list as her only goals are not getting killed by the monster infested school and harnessing her dark powers while mastering enough magical skills to survive Graduation next year. All this changes when unexpected friendships and alliances are thrust into her face, and she realizes she has to help save the students of the school. It is also absolutely hilarious as she slowly tries to understand how friendship works and how to respond to them in an appropriately friendly manner. I cannot wait for the next one.”

Length: 13 hours 38 minutes

Chain Gang All Stars

“Sometimes I read a book so profound, and yet so profoundly disturbing, that I don’t know whether to beg everyone to read it or caution them not to. Chain-Gang All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah is a novel, but I found myself checking again and again to see what was factual and what was fiction, and much of the commentary on the prison system is based on fact. If you like books that make you think about hard things, that shake up your complacency, preorder this one. And find a friend to read it with you. You’ll want to discuss it as soon as you turn the last page. ”

Mad Honey

A Novel

By Jodi Picoult & Jennifer Finney Boylan
Narrated by: Carrie Coon, Key Taw, Jodi Picoult & Jennifer Finney Boylan
Length: 15 hours 12 minutes

Mad Honey

“This is an incredibly powerful story that I think everyone should read. Told from the perspective of two different characters, who despite being at different stages in their lives, are trying to figure out who they are. It examines the traumas that we experience in life, how we process those (or don't), and how they shape us. It looks at who we know ourselves to be, how we honor that (or don't), and the strength it takes to truly be yourself. The people that read the two different narrators are perfectly cast, and really add to the impact and experience of the story for the listener. I don't think that it is possible to read this book and not come away changed in the best ways. I believe that if everyone read this, the world would be a much more empathetic place.”

Iron Widow

Iron Widow: Book #1

By Xiran Jay Zhao
Narrated by: Rong Fu
Length: 12 hours 13 minutes

Iron Widow

“A young woman still reeling from the loss of her sister in a horribly unequal society based around defending themselves from an alien threat sets readers up for a whirlwind of an adventure as Zetian seeks both revenge and a way to keep other women from falling to the same fate her sister did. Power and privilege afforded to gender are both explored and taken advantage of in a world where women magic-users are named and judged based only on what they can add to their male partners, but the story is never as simple as it seems at first. The conclusions we reach are as dazzling and wondrous as the settings we visit!”

Circe

“A bold retelling of the Circe episode from Homer's Odyssey that not only captures the interlocking pieces of Greek mythology, but also gives each god, titan, and Grecian a pulsing complexity. Both Circe the book and the character are quiet, sensual and--at times--freewheeling, adventurous, and devastating. Perdita Week's performance here is multi-layered and captivating. The voices she chooses to portray each character captures the unfolding drama and humor beautify.”

How to Keep House While Drowning

A Gentle Approach to Cleaning and Organizing

By KC Davis
Narrated by: KC Davis & Dr. Raquel Martin
Length: 3 hours 3 minutes

How to Keep House While Drowning

“I absolutely loved the book and wanted to immediately listen to it again! I was also thrilled to be reading a book written by a Licensed Professional Counselor about cleaning of all things! This book's primary focus is mental health, and this is the lens in which cleaning is viewed from. Davis addresses trauma and how it can impact the completion of certain tasks in the home, introduces self-care kits and placing them around the house, and dedicates a portion of her book on caring for Black hair. What I think is most important about this book is its emphasis on disconnecting cleaning, morality, and identity. You are not a bad parent or person if your home is messy. Throughout the book, Davis offers and encourages self-compassionate reframing of thoughts about cleaning. She prompts the reader to reflect on where these thoughts and feelings about cleaning and its assumed connection to self-worth and competency come from. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, fatigue, depression, ADHD, or lack of support, or wish to have a healthier relationship with cleaning and yourself, I would highly recommend this book.”

This book would be great for readers who would prefer a non-steamy read. I felt for Savannah as I learned more about her family's dynamic and how she has tried to navigate it. How to Sell a Haunted House

How to Sell a Haunted House

“Remember that feeling of staying up late, reading a spooky Goosebumps book by flashlight under your blanket? How to Sell a Haunted House is kind of like that, but 100x more terrifying. Each element of this novel on its own is enough to give me nightmares (puppets, body horror, creepy children, etc), but combine them and you will never sleep again. Listening to this masterful horror novel had my yelling 'No, no, no, no, NO!' in public places. My heart rate tracker spiked while I was listening to it. I'm not sure how else to tell you to read this book if you're looking for a good old fashioned scare!”

Beach Read

By Emily Henry
Narrated by: Julia Whelan
Length: 10 hours 12 minutes

Beach Read

“Two vastly different authors, one summer in close proximity, and a challenge issued to write in each other’s style, and do it better. Is that the set up for a perfect romance? Yes. The answer is absolutely, positively, 100% yes. Equal parts witty banter, real-world issues, and incredible character dynamics, this should be the go to for anyone looking for something fun, but undeniably full of heart.”

Nona the Ninth

Locked Tomb: Book #3

By Tamsyn Muir
Narrated by: Moira Quirk
Length: 17 hours 46 minutes

Nona the Ninth

“My honest review of this book is basically inarticulate screaming, wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending of garments, etc. I've rarely in my adult life been so INTO a book series--I've re-read and re-listened to Gideon and Harrow multiple times, and Nona will soon join the rotation. These books are bonkers fun and I loved every wild and confusing and sweet and funny moment of Nona, and am eagerly awaiting Alecto! Very glad Nona got her own book--I love her with a similar depth of passion as I do Gideon and Harrow respectively. Remarkable. What the f*** is going ON??? I can't wait.”

Now Is Not the Time to Panic

A Novel

By Kevin Wilson
Narrated by: Ginnifer Goodwin & Kevin Wilson
Length: 6 hours 12 minutes

If you enjoyed Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, then you’ll love Now Is Not the Time to Panic.

“I loved this novel! Wilson does a great job at evoking the nostalgia of a teen that lived in the early 90s! The book reads quickly like a movie and I found myself sad to have to turn it off! It's fascinating to think that two teens could do something that can snowball in a way to impact the world. In the end, I empathized with the main character and was glad for the alternate timelines so that I could see how she made it into adulthood. This book is perfect for anyone who loves 90s pop culture, coming of age stories, and an interesting plot!”

Talking to Strangers

What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know

By Malcolm Gladwell
Narrated by: Malcolm Gladwell
Length: 8 hours 57 minutes

Talking to Strangers

“Fascinating! How and why we so frequently misinterpret the words, intentions, and sincerity of strangers. Computers, analyzing only information, are far better at judging someone’s guilt or innocence (and future behavior) than judges, psychologists, and witnesses. Based on our preconceptions of how people should behave in certain situations, the guilty often appear innocent and the innocent look like cold-hearted liars. They’re mismatched. Their outer reactions, facial expressions, and behavior don’t match our socially biased expectations. But wait, how do culture, alcohol, or surroundings further muck up our interactions? That’s just the tip of this Gladwellian iceberg.”

The City We Became

A Novel
The Great Cities: Book #1

By N. K. Jemisin
Narrated by: Robin Miles
Length: 16 hours 12 minutes

The City We Became

“What did I just listen to and why did I like it so much? Part of falling in love with this book was the listening experience, to be certain. The narration was stellar. The production was on point. But the story... the story itself is sublime. N.K. Jemisin has written a love letter to New York City - but not the one in bright, bold letters on the silver screen - the real city, and the real people who inhabit it and call it home, even if only temporarily. And it was beyond my wildest dreams (and nightmares). The City We Became is so incredibly layered and nuanced - diving into discussions of racism and sexism and the fallacy of good vs evil. I wanted nothing more than to steep in its long chapters, and get to know its boroughs as intimately as Jemisin would allow - not mere stereotypes but fully fleshed and brilliant, blinding avatars. Witty, subversive, imaginative, unbelievable. Get on this wild ride.”

The Book Eaters

By Sunyi Dean
Narrated by: Katie Erich
Length: 13 hours 27 minutes

The Book Eaters

The Book Eaters is an extraordinary debut by Sunyi Dean. This horror story is very much in the genre of modern-day fairy tales as we witness what a mother will do to keep her son alive in a world where there are those who eat books and those who eat minds. Set in the modern-day United Kingdom, there are physical and mental battles as well as an exploration of chosen family, queer identity, and misogyny. The audio version (we suggest from Libro.fm!) includes an intimate and exclusive conversation between the author and narrator about the book and neurodivergency among other topics.”

Length: 10 hours 22 minutes

The Guest List

“This was a great, suspenseful listen. It wasn’t as spooky as I’d been hoping for, but it was an excellent mystery. The story takes place on an island off of Ireland with an old manor house that is hosting a posh wedding. The story starts the day before the murder and ends with the body being found. We get the viewpoint of several of the guests and the bride as the story builds up to the murder. By the time it happens there are numerous people who would want the victim dead (and you will too). A very original, very well written mystery. ”

The Soulmate

A Novel

By Sally Hepworth
Narrated by: Barrie Kreinik & Jessica Douglas-Henry
Length: 7 hours 43 minutes

The Soulmate

The Soulmate is about two couples, Pippa and Gabe and Amanda and Max. It is a story of family, mental illness, and what it means to truly love someone. The riveting thriller is told from the viewpoints of the two wives, both in the past and the present. Pippa, who is very much alive, is trying to understand what has happened and what she can do to protect her family. Amanda, who is dead is trying to discover exactly what happened that led to her death. One of the best domestic thrillers I have listened to in ages, the short chapters make you want to listen to 'just one more' so you can find out what has happened and what is going to happen.”
