Audiobooks that support your bookstore
The Hockessin Book Shelf is a new and used bookstore located in Hockessin, Delaware established in 2002. Like our state, the store, with 826 square feet of inventory space, is a small wonder. We stock a little bit of everything with our largest section being fiction, mystery, romance and children’s books.
Rebecca Dowling, the Hockessin Book Shelf’s owner came to bookselling after years of being a social worker. What began as a part time job, evolved into a full time passion. After over 10 years as a bookseller, Rebecca took over the store in 2007 from the original owner who retired to Hawaii.
Events have become an integral part of our store, in 2014 we completed renovations which allowed us to hold more events in house. We now host authors, both nationally and locally published, non-author events, book clubs and workshops. For us the Shop Local movement is a way of life and our store's health is dependent on the health of our neighbors. Maintaining strong community partnerships is very important to us, story time at the Woodside Farm Creamery during the summer, Book Groups at local restaurants, and Cookbook Club at Delaware Nature Society’s Coverdale Farm Preserve are just a few examples.
At the Hockessin Book Shelf we are known for our customer service and a well-read staff—we love books and our reading habits are eclectic, covering all niches from genres to literature, biographies to children's books. We have become the go to store for summer reading, book groups and fun in-store promotions.

“Gabe and Pippa seem to be leading the perfect life in Sally Hepworth’s The Soulmate, a gripping domestic suspense tale. They have their dream home on the coast, two beautiful daughters, and Gabe is a local hero for talking the would-be victims of suicide that come to the cliffside from jumping. But then someone does jump, and secrets and betrayals come to light. Told in the alternating voices of Pippa as she tries to make sense of events and Amanda, the supposed suicide, and shifting in time ...”Genevieve • A Great Good Place for Books
“Erica Berry’s beautiful book is largely about society’s use of the wolf as a metaphor for something to be feared. The 'lone wolf', the 'big bad wolf', the 'wolf in sheep’s clothing - these images are detrimental to the animals who rarely harm humans or their livelihood, and they shift blame from those who often do: namely, men. Berry recounts many of her own experiences with anxiety and fear, especially as a woman alone, with thoughtful examination of warranted fear vs. reactionary assumption...”Mary • Raven Book Store
“When it comes to classics, we often feel we know the story without ever having read it for ourselves. Especially with the abundance of retellings and allusions in other media. This was definitely true for me when it came to this novel, but I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong! I may have known the overarching plot but the details, suspense, and urgency had me sneaking away to see how it all played out. This is one classic not to sleep on. ”Ashlee • Vroman's Bookstore
“Human nature, human desire, and magical realism at its finest, with a setting seemingly destined to be performed on stage. We follow customers and staff of a café rumored to allow quick trips to the past. The intricate rules and restrictions weed out all but the desperate. At times lighthearted and familiar and yet, equally heartbreaking. A look into the lives, hopes, dreams, and fears of a group of ordinary folks with an extraordinary opportunity. These stories will stay with me for years to...”Ashlee • Vroman's Bookstore
“This book is worth the hype! The story and the characters are so emotionally complex and stunning that I never wanted this book to end. Absolutely as beautiful as it is heart-wrenching - a read for gamers and non-gamers alike. ”Courtney • Auburn Oil Co. Booksellers
“Tony Award Winning actor Jefferson Mays is the perfect narrator for this story of the fabulously eccentric King Ludwig and Empress Sisi, who refused to fit into the societal expectations forced upon them. His arch, knowing tone and pitch perfect delivery of Jac Jemc's wonderfully iconoclastic writing work hand in hand to create an entertaining and unforgettable listening experience. If you want historical fiction that feels alive, daring, and funny, this is the perfect book for you! ”David • Literati Bookstore
