From the creator of the award-winning TV series black-ish comes a collection of personal, hilarious, and provocative essays on what it's like to be black in America today.

In THIS IS BASIC SH*T, Kenya Barris uses his own personal stories to talk about race and class with the fierceness and humor that fans will recognize from black-ish. It will include stories from his own life-from his family's journey "from ashy to classy" to the roots of his obsession with "crispy" sneakers to life as a father of six kids he refers to as "flies in the buttermilk." Kenya lays bare the battles that black people have with themselves-caught between wanting to blend in (be a good Negro, someone the NAACP would honor with an award) and wanting to affirm their standing as outsiders (be someone BET would do a reality show about). THIS IS BASIC SH*T is an unflinching look at race from an exciting new voice in comedy.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kenya Barris is married with six children and resides in Encino, California. He is the creator of the series Black-ish (which is loosely based on his own life) and Grown-ish. Barris has worked on several television shows, including the CW's The Game and Girlfriends and was a co-creator of America's Next Top Model. On the film side he is most recently credited as co-writer on the female friendship comedy, Girls Trip, and upcoming remake of Stir Crazy.
