“After staying away from chess for years because of her complicated feelings about her dad, Mallory plays in a charity tournament and ends up beating the current world champion, Nolan. When she is approached to join a chess club on a fellowship, she ends up taking it, telling herself she'll only play for the year. Except then she actually starts playing chess again and realizes with Nolan's help just how much she really loves it - not to mention the friends (and maybe more?) she makes along the way. The characters are so engaging, and Hazelwood has a true gift for including things like science and chess in all their technical glory without making it bog down the story with things a typical reader won't understand. She's magic, and I love it.”

“Ali Hazelwood never disappoints, and her first YA novel is no different. I cannot recommend this book enough to romance readers of all ages! Mallory is forced back into the chess world despite her past, and meets Nolan, the current world chess champion. Tension, pining, angst, and swoon-worthy. ”

“Once upon a time, someone I love gave me a chess set and tried to teach me to play, and it gave me one of the worst headaches of my entire life. That being said, this f’ing delightful story was almost enough to make me want to try again. As ever, Hazelwood displays her brilliance, constructing her story like a chess game, sprinkled with red herrings where cynics like me feel like we can see where she is driving the plot. There was a terrible moment where I feared that this, at last, was going to be the book where Ali Hazelwood disappointed me, and our heroine was set on a trajectory of terrible decisions and absolute self-ignorance. Not so! Hazelwood was fifteen moves ahead of me and instead of the climax and resolution going in one predictable direction, she came in with an end-game swerve that reaffirmed my absolute faith in her narratives. While, as a romance, this one certainly falls into the PG category, I dispute this being called a YA as the main character, while only 18, is dealing with issues like mortgage payments. However, I love that I could hand this to a parent of a 12 year old who is reading 'ahead; and have zero qualms. Karissa Vacker does an awesome job narrating, too. 10/10.”

“Ali doesn't need my vote of confidence but here it is anyway! This was enjoyable, witty and gives YA readers the type of story they deserve - swoon worthy and full of heart. Karissa Vacker's narration was easy to get swept away by! ”

“Hazelwood makes chess sexy! Definitely upper YA due to themes and topics. Like all of my Hazelwood reads I couldn't put it down. I started it as an audiobook but couldn't wait between trips in the car, so I also got the digital ALC so I could keep going!”

In this clever and swoonworthy YA debut from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis, life’s moving pieces bring rival chess players together in a match for the heart.
Mallory Greenleaf is done with chess. Every move counts nowadays; after the sport led to the destruction of her family four years earlier, Mallory’s focus is on her mom, her sisters, and the dead-end job that keeps the lights on. That is, until she begrudgingly agrees to play in one last charity tournament and inadvertently wipes the board with notorious “Kingkiller” Nolan Sawyer: current world champion and reigning Bad Boy of chess.
Nolan’s loss to an unknown rook-ie shocks everyone. What’s even more confusing? His desire to cross pawns again. What kind of gambit is Nolan playing? The smart move would be to walk away. Resign. Game over. But Mallory’s victory opens the door to sorely needed cash-prizes and despite everything, she can’t help feeling drawn to the enigmatic strategist....
As she rockets up the ranks, Mallory struggles to keep her family safely separated from the game that wrecked it in the first place. And as her love for the sport she so desperately wanted to hate begins to rekindle, Mallory quickly realizes that the games aren’t only on the board, the spotlight is brighter than she imagined, and the competition can be fierce (-ly attractive. And intelligent…and infuriating…)
Ali Hazelwood is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis, as well as a writer of peer-reviewed articles about brain science, in which no one makes out and the ever after is not always happy. Originally from Italy, she lived in Germany and Japan before moving to the US to pursue a PhD in neuroscience. When Ali is not at work, she can be found running, eating cake pops, or watching sci-fi movies with her three feline overlords (and her slightly-less-feline husband).

"Ali Hazelwood is the queen of smart rom-coms, and Check & Mate is her best book yet. Filled with snappy banter, clever characters, and crackling tension (and lots of chess!), this is the perfect rivals-to-lovers romance. Check & Mate will have you swooning, laughing, staying up all night, and smiling so much your face hurts. This book is my new obsession. Who knew chess could be so romantic?" —Alex Aster, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Lightlark

"Ali Hazelwood is a known master of deeply clever, ridiculously satisfying 'JUST KISS ALREADY!!' slow burns, and this book is all of that and so much more. Readers are going to ship Mallory and Nolan hard enough to break their sails. If you’re not ready to swoon and gasp and cackle in front of strangers, read this book in public at your own risk." —Emma Lord, New York Times bestselling author of When You Get the Chance

"Hazelwood (Love, Theoretically, for adults) makes a seamless transition into YA romance with this well-researched read. Via Mallory and Nolan’s complementary personalities and complex histories, Hazelwood crafts a feminist rendering that shedslight on sexist views within the world of competitive chess, all while spinning a swoon-worthy romance." —Publishers Weekly
