“I’m feeling a slight bit of shame as I write this, and a great feeling of excitement. The shame is because I started reading Anne Tyler years ago when I was younger. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, The Accidental Tourist, and Saint Maybe. And then, I stopped. For no reason. Just didn’t keep up. But now, after having listened to Redhead, I’m so excited that I have all these Ann Tyler books that I missed waiting for me. Listening to Redhead by the Side of the Road was like calling an old friend that you haven’t spoken to in years (I think everyone can relate to that at the moment) and being so moved and thankful that the two of you haven’t missed a beat. MacLeod Andrews does a beautiful job with the narration. He delineates and gives life to each character. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to be outside and walk during this time and this wonderful novel is a great companion to have with you for a while. And, I have to say, the engagement dinner party at Micah’s sister’s home is one of the best sequences I’ve read in a novel in a long time. Thank you, Anne Tyler.”

“Redhead by the Side of the Road is classic Anne Tyler starting with a leading male character who is bit on the spectrum. Micah leads an uncomplicated life dominated by daily and weekly routines and he likes his life just this way. One day, things begin to change and it takes Micah a little while to catch on and catch up. A playful story about embracing life’s disruptions.”

“Becoming immersed in an Anne Tyler book has been one of my great reading joys. She was one of the first adult fiction writers I loved when I started reading contemporary fiction in high school. Redhead by the Side of the Road is delightful. Tyler is at the top of her writing game at age seventy-eight. Thank you, Anne Tyler, for reading so many quirky, funny, and relatable characters over the years!”

“Just finished listening to Anne Tyler's newest novel: Redhead by the Side of the Road and wished it was longer! It's a lovely little appetizer of a story about Micah the Tech Hermit, a 40 something, very private man whose daily structure comprises his whole life. Each day set aside for a certain housekeeping task, everything fits into nice little categories, including the Traffic God, who he hears in his head while driving to his tech appointments. He carefully tries to manage his life in the same very tidy way. Of course life isn't always like that, as Micah discovers, and as things get messier he must learn to adapt or find himself very alone. Told in Tyler's humorous, gifted way of looking at human nature, leaves the listener wanting more.”

“Micah Mortimer is a forty-year-old computer technician and custodian of his apartment building. He lives a very structured (OCD?) life, unable to see beyond the parameters of his daily schedule and habits until his life is shaken up by first, a college-age young man who appears on his doorstep, thinking that Micah is his biological father, and second, his long time girlfriend announcing that she was breaking off their relationship. In her typical Tyleresque fashion of dissecting human emotions and quotidian activities, the author tells a heart-warming story about a middle aged man who finally realizes the importance of relationships. ”

“Tyler's novels are always worth scooping up—but especially this gently amusing soother, right now.” —NPR
From the beloved Anne Tyler, a sparkling new novel about misperception, second chances, and the sometimes elusive power of human connection.
Micah Mortimer is a creature of habit. A self-employed tech expert, superintendent of his Baltimore apartment building, cautious to a fault behind the steering wheel, he seems content leading a steady, circumscribed life.
But one day his routines are blown apart when his woman friend (he refuses to call anyone in her late thirties a "girlfriend") tells him she's facing eviction, and a teenager shows up at Micah's door claiming to be his son. These surprises, and the ways they throw Micah's meticulously organized life off-kilter, risk changing him forever.
An intimate look into the heart and mind of a man who finds those around him just out of reach, and a funny, joyful, deeply compassionate story about seeing the world through new eyes, Redhead by the Side of the Road is a triumph, filled with Anne Tyler's signature wit and gimlet-eyed observation.
