“Do you and your partner have differing philosophies on Apocalypse Management? I CACKLED reading Zero Stars, Do Not Recommend. I cackled, and then I brought the ARC back to the bookstore and told Manager John he should read it, but then the bookstore owner did a legit doubletake and started paying Proper Attention when I said 'so they're a couple on vacation in the Bahamas and THE SUN EXPLODES and now they're forming a desperate island society and culture as everything implodes and the rich guests steal all the food and raid the vending machines' and then he stole it from John's desk. ARC-yoinking is a compliment to authors, let me tell you. You would not think that the end of the world would be hilarious, but it is. I, too, would get sidetracked into a conversation about how to retrieve your Netflix password when confronting a madman with a gun. In addition to the lols, there are also deep themes about boiling your life down to what is really important around you, and to the paralysis of Potential, and grief of wasted time, and to standing up and doing The Next Right Thing instead of the Easy Thing. Also, I must say, this book made me feel good about all of my hobbies being rooted in apocalypse preparation as an anxiety coping mechanism.
