Summary

Emilio Carrère's “La emperatriz del Rastro” is a story of love, passions and crime in Madrid at the beginning of the 20th century, but it is also a story of the popular Rastro street market and the humble people who inhabit it and make a living on its margins. The author immerses us in the popular soul of Madrid, with its characters, its popular language, its lights and shadows, its miseries and dreams, so that the people of Madrid become the protagonist of the narrative as much as the main characters of the drama.

First published in 1927 in the collection “La Novela de Hoy” of the publishing house Atlántida, with illustrations by Izquierdo Durán, “La emperatriz del Rastro” is a very little known work but, for its literary values and the social and human portrait it makes, it deserves to be vindicated as a good example of the popular novel that Emilio Carrère cultivated so well.
