Poeta en Nueva York is a highly personal work, the pinnacle of surrealist poetry, and a unique poetic experience. Written by Federico García Lorca during his stay at Columbia University in New York, between 1929 and 1930, and during a trip to Cuba, it is an ambitious and complex work that, through popular language and some of the most surprising, vehement and beautiful images of poetry in Spanish, arouses strong feelings and denounces the injustice and dehumanization of modern societies, which he contrasts with nature. In his poems, reflections, emotions and personal conflicts of the author coexist with a direct criticism of the sorrounding reality, while vindicating those who defend their own humanity. In this sense, Lorca does not hide his predilection for those who suffer, for the disadvantaged, for the black minority, or for children. Poeta en Nueva York is one of the most original and important works of the Generation of '27.
