Summary

That was Joshua Ragland's golden rule for survival in the After Days. In his previous life he had studied law, and he figured that back then, people probably said the same thing about lawyers. That was before America fell. Before a deadly biological strike and subsequent land invasion brought the superpower to her knees in a matter of days.

Unlike the rest of the adult population, he survived the virus and by some miracle lived to see the invaders pushed west by a retaliatory, but futile strike. Unfortunately, they left the eastern seaboard of America a shell of its former self, its cities and suburbs abandoned to the forsaken children and teenagers that survived their "work" camps.

Now, ten years on, he is a hardened survivor. A drifter who wanders the ruins of America, keeping to himself and only tolerating human contact when he has to. Unfortunately, he's about to break his own rule.

When Ragland intervenes to save the life of a young girl captured by a pack of cannibals, he unwittingly sets in motion a chain of events that will bring the horde down upon his head...
