Summary

Zaragoza," the sixth novel in Benito Pérez Galdós' Episodios Nacionales, recounts the second siege of Zaragoza (December 21, 1808 – February 21, 1809).

Gabriel de Araceli, escaping captivity from the French Army, witnesses the city's preparation and four months of resistance against Napoleon's army. The narrative also explores the love story between seminarian Agustín de Montoria and María Candiola, daughter of a wealthy usurer. Through vivid, cinematic storytelling, Galdós reflects on patriotism's emergence in Spain, juxtaposing it with the fanaticism and horrors of war, portrayed as cruel and absurd. He contrasts opposing perspectives, blending historical events with moral introspection.
