Embarking from England as part of Commodore Ansonโ€™s expedition to the Pacific, HMS Wager was wrecked on a desert island to the southward of Chiloe. Following the wreck, the crew suffered dreadful privations from famine and descended into mutinous factionalism, theft, and murder. This account by young midshipman John Byron describes the events of the wreck and mutiny. It also narrates his journey home in company with Captain Cheap and a small group of loyal officers and seamen.

Vice-Admiral John Byron (1723 โ€“1786) was the second son of the fourth Baron Byron. As a young midshipman in the British Royal Navy, he sailed in Ansonโ€™s expedition of 1740, and was serving aboard HMS Wager when it was wrecked on the southern coast of Chile. After more than five years, Byron returned to England with the Wagerโ€™s captain, and continued his naval career. He circumnavigated the globe as a commodore with his own squadron in 1764โ€“1766 and fought in both the Seven Yearsโ€™ War and the American Revolutionary War. He became one of the most revered figures in Royal Naval history. His grandson was the poet George Gordon Byron, who referenced his grandfatherโ€™s adventures in his poetry.ย
