The world of young Mr. Lewisham is one day turned upside down when he meets and falls in love with Ethel Henderson, a young woman from London who is visiting relatives in Sussex. Their brief and innocent rendezvous has significant implications when Lewisham’s job is threatened. Some time later, Lewisham moves to London, where he decides to go search of Ethel, but finding her proves to be more complicated than expected …

This book is said to closely resemble events in H. G. Wells’s own life.

H. G. Wells (1866–1946) was born Herbert George Wells in Bromley, England. Wells came from a working-class background. His father played professional cricket and ran a hardware store for a time. Wells’s parents were often worried about his poor health. At the age of seven, he had an accident that left him bedridden for several months. His first novel, The Time Machine, was an instant success and Wells produced a series of science fiction novels which pioneered our ideas of the future. His later work focused on satire and social criticism. Wells laid out his socialist views of human history in his Outline of History. He forecasted the rise of major cities and suburbs, economic globalization, and aspects of future military conflicts. Remarkably, considering his support for women and women’s rights, Wells did not predict the rise of women in the workplace.

With a background as an international award-winning interior designer, author, and speaker, bringing color to the written word and creating movies for the ears through voiceover and audiobook narration is Robin Siegerman’s greatest professional delight. In Robin’s spare time, she can be found surrounded by a bevvy of rescue dogs, singing with her a Capella ensemble SoundCrowd in Toronto, or playing board games with her husband, Steve, son Julian, and daughter-in-law Danielle.
