It’s the summer of 1989, and Beatrice and Henrietta Volt are coming of age on remote Fowler Island, their ancestral home and wild playground. Thicker than thieves, the sisters plot their futures, having no idea that their parents are separating. Or that the plan is to separate them.

Ten years pass before Henrie gets a desperate call from her sister―their father has died suddenly and B.B. needs her to come back to the island for the funeral. But Henrie doesn’t want to go back. She’s barely put the island and all those rumors about missing women behind her. And isn’t it odd that she remembers nothing at all about the night she left? And why is she suddenly filled with fear about the quarry pond behind the house?

Told from the perspectives of four flawed, fascinating women, this book is a lush, enthralling fable about monsters real and imagined.

From the unbounded imagination of Rachel Eve Moulton, the critically acclaimed author of Tinfoil Butterfly, comes another eerie, terrifying exploration of family and legacy: Will the Volt sisters inherit the horrors of their past or surpass them?

Rachel Eve Moulton is the author of Tinfoil Butterfly, which was shortlisted for the 2019 Shirley Jackson Award and longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. Her work has appeared in Chicago Quarterly Review, Bryant Literary Review, and Southwest Review, among other publications.

Chelsea Stephens is an experienced narrator and actress who enjoys unfolding characters and bringing listeners into new worlds. With experience in acting, singing, and voiceover, she has a talent for mystery, fantasy, and young-adult novels.

Nancy Peterson loves to weave a great story with her words. With over twenty-five years of experience in theater, television, film, commercial voiceover, and audiobook narration, she brings depth, passion, and nuance to every project, capturing the heart of each of them.

Amanda Stribling grew up as a musical theater/show-choir girl and went on to pursue a journalism degree from the University of Tennessee. She loves all things performance and often lends her voice to audiobook productions. A southern girl, she currently resides with her husband and twins in Nashville, Tennessee.

Bringing the experience of nearly four decades of theater, film, and television acting to audiobook narration, AudioFile Earphones Award winner Janet Metzger has deftly interpreted the many-faceted characters of Southern fiction writers such as Sarah Addison Allen, Patti Callahan Henry, and Kristy Woodson Harvey. As an award-winning documentary narrator and a master teacher at Emory University School of Law, where she teaches storytelling and persuasion, Janet brings both warmth and authority to nonfiction as well. Whether she is narrating a Southern romance, a heroine's journey, or an innovative take on business, Janet's warm and inviting voice will draw you into the story.

Erin DeWard is an Audie Award-winning audiobook narrator and a classically trained stage actor. A longtime company member of The Strange Bedfellows, a New York-based Shakespeare company, she can also be found working with The Children's Shakespeare Theater. She has been working in the audio industry as a writer, a voice talent, an advocate for media accessibility for people who are blind, and a trainer for over a decade. She is a proud and grateful member of SAG/AFTRA.

Reviews

“This vivid and masterful domestic horror novel from Moulton…expertly balances hope and dread as the tension builds to a fever pitch. Readers will be hooked.”

“This book has all the elements you could want in a thriller―missing women, a mysterious mansion, monsters, ghosts, and, at its center, a pair of sisters as unsettling as the Blackwoods of Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle.”

"Pure nightmare fuel.”

“A ferociously reimagined fairy tale of cursed birthrights, guarded family history, and the lure of a mythic, monstrous place called home.”

“Twists and turns keep readers riveted through the entire novel, and the ending will stick with them for days. Fans of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House will appreciate it.”

“Weird and exhilarating and funny and sad and disturbing and scary and poignant and righteous.”
