“The Redhead of Auschwitz is a story of the indomitable human spirit found within the body of an eighteen year old woman who boldly said, 'I will live,' when faced with life and death in the concentration camp, Auschwitz. The book was written by Rosieโs granddaughter, Nechama Birnbaum. It begins in 1944 Hungary when the Naziโs invaded and forced the Jewish people out to be taken to the concentration camps. However, Nechema did not only share her grandmotherโs experiences in the camps, she also takes the readers into Rosieโs childhood and adolescence. In doing so, you are able to see Rosie as a whole, not just the victim of the evils of the world. Yet, Rosieโs message throughout the book is one of hope and love. You feel it when she quotes proverbs at the beginning of every chapter, and you feel it through her story. Even in the darkness there is light, Rosie is one of those lights. The Redhead of Auschwitz is one of the most powerful books I have ever read. The audiobook is narrated by the very talented Tavia Gilbert, who has an amazing way of bringing the listener into the story with her emotional narration.”

Rosie was always told her red hair was a curse, but she never believed it. She often dreamed what it would look like under a white veil with the man of her dreams by her side. However, her life takes a harrowing turn in 1944 when she is forced out of her home and sent to the most gruesome of places: Auschwitz.
Upon arrival, Rosieโs head is shaved and along with the loss of her beautiful hair, she loses the life she once cherished. Among the chaos and surrounded by hopelessness, Rosie realizes the only thing the Nazis cannot take away from her is the fierce redhead resilience in her spirit. When all of her friends conclude they are going to heaven from Auschwitz, she remains determined to get home. She summons all of her courage, through death camps and death marches to do just that.
This victorious biography, written by Nechama Birnbaum in honor of her grandmother, is as full of life as it is of death. It is about the intricacies of Jewish culture that still exist today and the tender experiences that are universal to all humanity. It is a story about what happens when we choose hate over love.
Nechama Birnbaum knew since she was a little girl that she would write her grandmotherโs story. Her friendโs grandmas brought them presents. Hers brought her stories, and stories were her favorite thing of all. She knew her grandmaโs tenacity started long before she told her friends in Auschwitz that she was going home from there. Nechama lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband and daughters and nearby her redhead grandma.
Tavia Gilbert has recorded hundreds of titles across a wide span of genres, including Erica Spindler romantic thrillers, John Scalzi science fiction, Jeaniene Frost fantasy.ย She received four Audies nominations and won three Audiofile Earphones Awards for titles The Obituary Writer, Sing Them Home and The Day of the Pelican.ย In addition to voice acting, Gilbert is an accomplished producer, singer and theater actor.
