Learn moreSold is a terrifying, gripping and true story about a young Russian girl who dreams of a better life, but instead falls victim to trafficking. Seventeen-year-old Natasja is attracted by an offer to work as a nanny in Sweden. Her ticket to freedom turns out to be a worse nightmare than she ever could have imagined. Time and time again, she is sold to different men. But even though she is slowly falling apart, Natasja refuses to give up and silently starts to plan her escape. In Sold, she talks about how she managed to get free against all odds.
Vera Efron was born in the Siberian city of Novokuznetsk in the shadows of the Ural mountains in 1959. She belongs to the famous Russian publisher family Efron, equivalent to the Germany Brockhous family. It is most known for the large Russian encyclopedia, 86 volumes, published between 1890-1906. At seventeen years old, she followed in her parents footsteps and started studying geology at the Leningrad University. In spite of the fact that Vera left university as top of her class, her dreams to become a researcher were smashed when she had to leave the Soviet Union under dramatic circumstances. Her too straight critic of the Soviet dictator's regime forced her to take this drastic measure. After obtaining permanent residence in Sweden in 1989 and having learnt Swedish, she founded the publishing house Efron & Daughter AB.
