Mazurka, nocturne en polonaise. Hoewel menig componist zich met die genres heeft beziggehouden, denkt vrijwel iedereen bij die woorden automatisch aan Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849). Een groot deel van zijn korte leven woonde hij in ballingschap in Parijs.
Zijn subtiele composities en pianospel, de heimwee naar zijn geboorteland Polen en het langzaam wegkwijnen door TBC maakte hem tot een hyperromantische figuur. Chopin was een groot vernieuwer en heeft enorm veel invloed gehad op latere generaties componisten en pianisten. Zijn populariteit is nooit afhankelijk geweest van mode.
