Zane Greyยฎ (1872โ1939), born in Ohio, was practicing dentistry in New York when he and his wife published his first novel. Grey presented the West as a moral battleground in which his characters are destroyed because of their inability to change or are redeemed through a final confrontation with their past. The man whose name is synonymous with Westerns made his first trip west in 1907 at age thirty-five. More than 130 films have been based on his work.

Reviews
โThe title story and three others concentrate on Texas, Arizona, Utahโand Mexicoโfor wild backgrounds and vigorous action. The Ranger thwarts bandits and kidnappers and wins a Spanish beauty; Canyon Walls are a good hideout for Monty, lead him to a reformed life, a wifeโand a pardon for his past misdeeds; Avalanche, plus the winter, imprisons two men, raised as brothers, now at odds over a girl, and brings them together in their efforts to survive; From Missouri comes young Jane Stacey to bring trouble to Springerโs ranch but she gets a chance to stay in the West permanently. Robust.โ
