A young policeman’s first day on duty becomes a violent and highly charged initiation into law enforcement, as the rookie cop becomes involved in a case of suspected domestic violence.

Through the use of stereotypical characters, realist vernacular, physical brutality and frequent profanity, Williamson investigates ‘ocker culture’ and the violence and sexism which lurked underneath the veneer of Australian society. In doing so, he made room for Australian voices in a new and shocking way.

Remarkable for its blend of boisterous humour and horrifying violence, The Removalists has since acquired a reputation as a classic statement on Australian authoritarianism and is a key work in the study of Australian drama.

David Williamson is one of Australia's best known and most widely performed playwrights and one of Australia's leading screenwriters. His dramas have been produced by all the major Australian theatre companies and have been translated into many languages and performed internationally. He has also written (or co-written) scripts for 15 feature films, including the original screenplays for Gallipoli, The Year of Living Dangerously and Phar Lap. His movie adaptations of his own plays include The Removalists, Don's Party, The Club, Travelling North, Emerald City and Sanctuary.

PATRICK PHILLIPS is the author of two previous poetry collections, Boy and Chattahoochee, a work of nonfiction, Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America, and is translator of When We Leave Each Other: Selected Poems by the Danish writer Henrik Nordbrandt. His honors include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, a Pushcart Prize, and the Lyric Poetry Award from the Poetry Society of America. Phillips lives in Brooklyn, New York, and teaches at Drew University.

John Howard (born 22 October 1952) is an Australian stage and screen actor. Howard is best loved for his appearances in the Australian television series Blue Heelers, SeaChange, Always Greener, All Saints and Packed to the Rafters. Howard was the Associate Director of the Sydney Theatre Company from 1992 to 1995 and launched the Australian Peoples Theatre associated with the Sydney Theatre Company. Howard has also won the 2009 Sydney Critics Circle Awards for Best Stage Actor, and the Centenary Medal for Service to the Arts and the Community.
