Gallaudet University was founded in 1856 in Washington, DC, and got its current name in 1954. Gallaudet was the first and is still the only university in the world just for deaf people. Not all of the students are deaf, but all of the students and teachers use ASL in the classroom. After student protesting in 1988, Dr. I. King Jordan was selected as the first deaf president of Gallaudet University.
