‘Everyone agreed that the day was just right for the picnic to Hanging Rock - a shimmering summer morning warm and still, with cicadas shrilling...’

St Valentine’s Day, in the midst of the hot summer of 1900, a party of schoolgirls went on a picnic to Hanging Rock.

Some were never to return...

An Australian classic, the disappearance of three girls and a schoolteacher at Hanging Rock has captivated and intrigued audiences for generations. Jacqueline McKenzie’s interpretation of the best selling novel captures all of the beauty of the Rock and illustrates the eerie sense of the unknown for which the story is legendary.

Joan Lindsay was born in Melbourne, where she went to school as a day-girl for a few years at Clyde Girls Grammar, then situated in East St Kilda. She knew and loved the Macedon district – the area in which The Picnic at Haging Rock is set from early childhood. In 1922, in London, she married Sir Daryl Lindsay. The Lindsays travelled together in Europe and the USA, Daryl with his paints and Joan with her typewriter. Sir Daryl died in 1976. Joan lived at their country home on the Mornington Peninsula, Mulberry Hill, Victoria, Australia. She died in December 1984.

Jacqueline McKenzie is an actress from Sydney, Australia. She graduated from the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, which boasts Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush among its alumni. She made her screen debut in Romper Stomper, starring opposite Russell Crowe. Her portrayal of the troubled Gabe in this film was the first of many award-winning performances. She has appeared in the Australian film Beneath Hill 60 and in television programs such as The 4400, Without a Trace and Hawaii Five-0.

Reviews

Picnic at Hanging Rock is a classic piece of Australian fiction, first published in 1967, and presenting a mystery which is so well known that many believe it to have some element of truth. A wonderful story which has withstood the test of time. On Valentine’s Day in the year 1900, three young ladies from a boarding school go missing during a class excursion to the famous Australian landmark Hanging Rock. The mystery is never solved, and the events that follow are disturbing, even bordering on supernatural. Jacqueline McKenzie portrays every character with subtle perfection. Her soft Australian accent is almost hypnotic, and haunting flute music between chapters adds to the mysterious air. Listeners won’t find a satisfying ending in this story - which is part of its draw - but they will hear melodious language and thought-provoking scenes. Those who are interested in the history of this well-known Australian novel should know that this is the original version, which doesn’t include the author’s posthumously published explanation.
