Mike McColl Jones has heard the words 'And now here's...' 6000 times and each of those 6000 times tonight show hosts such as Graham Kennedy, Don Lane, Bert Newton and Steve Vizard have walked into shot and spoken words written for them by Mike.

Few people are more qualified to write this history of Australian Tonight shows. In a career spanning decades, Mike has been a creator of television's funniest moments on-screen and an insider off-screen.

Mike McColl Jones started writing for his funny friends several years after TV commenced in Australia. He was personal writer to Graham Kennedy for In Melbourne Tonight and The Graham Kennedy Show; Head Writer for The Ernie Sigley Show, The Don Lane Show, Tonight Live with Steve Vizard, Stuart Wagstaff's IMT; and was creative consultant for In Melbourne Tonight with Frankie J. Holden in the mid-1990s. He has written over 200 specials for the Nine Network, which include 22 Logies and two Royal Command Performances, all hosted by Bert Newton. In all, he has done nearly 6000 shows, most of which were live to air.

Mark Mitchell is undoubtedly one of Australia's finest performers, actors and comedians. The success of The Comedy Company brought Mark Mitchell larger than life into the homes of all Australians with his portrayal of the Greek fruiterer Con. Mark's gift and love of character portrayals led him to secure many roles in television shows including Lift Off, Round the Twist, Sword of Honour, Willing and Abel and Anzacs. Mark's movie credits include Fallout, Ground Zero, Wills and Burke, Blonde and On the Beach.
