In 1994, twenty-five-year-old Yuyi Morales traveled from her home in Yelapa, Mexico, to the San Francisco Bay Area with her two-month-old son, Kelly, in order to secure permanent residency in this country. Her passage was not easy, and she spoke no English whatsoever. But due in large measure to help and guidance provided by area children's librarians, she learned English the same way her young son learned to read: through the picture books they shared together. In spare, lyrical verse, Yuyi has created a lasting testament to the journeys, both physical and metaphorical, that she and Kelly have taken together in the intervening years. Beautiful and powerful at any time-but given particular urgency as the status of our own Dreamers becomes uncertain-this is a story that is both topical and timeless.

Yuyi Morales is a Caldecott Honor and Pura Belpre award-winning author and illustrator. Born in Mexico and raised among giant grandmothers, mossy house walls, and rampaging feral gardens, she has a strong bond with the magical stories that run in her family. Since immigrating to the United States, she has drawn from her legacy and heritage to create some of the most celebrated Latino works in children's literature.

Originally from Mexico, Eileen Truax is a journalist and immigrant currently living in Los Angeles. She contributes regularly to Hoy Los Angeles and Unidos and writes for Latin American publications including Proceso, El Universal, and Gatopardo. Truax often speaks at colleges and universities about the Dreamer movement and immigration.

Adriana Sananes is an award-winning bilingual New York City stage actress, director, and narrator. A recipient of a theatre fellowship from The Princess Grace Foundation, she has recorded more than 150 audiobooks, including Spanish versions of Polar Bear, Polar Bear, To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman, and Pulitzer Prize winning Enrique’s Journey, for which she won a Audie for Best Spanish Narration.
