Learn moreThe Cask of Amontillado, a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, was first published in November 1846 in Godey's Lady's Book. In Italy at carnival time, a man takes revenge on a friend who he believes has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive. As in The Black Cat and The Tell-Tale Heart, Poe conveys the story from the murderer's perspective.
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American author of short stories, poetry, and literary criticism and theory. Titled "The Master of the Macabre" he is famous for his tales of mystery and horror. He was one of the earliest masters of the short story and is widely credited as the creator of detective fiction.
