Great horned owl Rufus is eight months old and still can’t hunt. When his mother is hit by a car, he discovers just how dangerous the forest can be. Reenie has given up on adults and learned how to care for herself—which is a good thing since she’s been sent to live with an aunt she’s never met. Yet this aunt has a wonderful secret: she’s a falconer who agrees to help Reenie catch an injured passage hawk in the wild and rehabilitate it. When Reenie traps bedraggled Rufus, his eyes lock onto her heart, and they form a powerful friendship. But can Rufus learn to trust in the outside world and fly free? And can Reenie open her heart enough to truly soar?

Dayna Lorentz is the author of the Dogs of the Drowned City trilogy, the No Safety in Numbers trilogy, and Of a Feather. She has worked in and around the foster-care system, most recently as a law clerk in the Vermont family courts, but she only just started exploring the sport of falconry. She lives with her husband and two children in Vermont.

Stephanie Willing is a voiceover artist based in New York. With an MFA in creative writing, classical training as a dancer, and a decade of experience treading the indie theater boards of New York City, she combines all her training and experience to bring each audiobook she narrates to life.

Pete Cross is an award-winning audiobook narrator and engineer who earned his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. A multiple Earphones Awards winner and Audie finalist, he was nominated for a SOVAS award for his narration of Moby Dick and received the 2022 Audie Award for Ryan La Sala’s Be Dazzled and the 2023 Odyssey Award for Ryan La Sala’s The Honeys.
