Denis Stone, a self-conscious young poet, is invited to Crome, renowned for its gatherings of intellectuals. Hosted by Henry and Priscilla Wimbush, the house party has much to offer the naïve Denis. The guests include the self-contained Anne, whom Denis adores; the handsome artist Gombauld, his rival for Anne’s affections; and the cynical Mr. Scogan. All have their stories and ideas to unfold but, as Denis comes to realize, ideas cannot compensate for reality.

Aldous Leonard Huxley (1894–1963) was an English poet, novelist, dramatist, essayist, and humanist philosopher. He attended Eton and Oxford and briefly taught at Eton before devoting himself solely to writing. His fifth novel, Brave New World, is one of the most read books in literary history.

Michael Maloney is an actor who has appeared in numerous television productions, including as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and Prince Hal in Henry IV, parts 1 and 2, for which he won Best Actor/Best Supporting Actor awards. His theater credits include Sleuth, Peer Gynt, and All My Sons, and his film credits include The Young Victoria and Notes on a Scandal. He has narrated numerous audiobooks, earning seven AudioFile Earphones Awards.

Reviews

Crome Yellow—Huxley’s first novel—is famous for its technique, ideas, and acute psychological descriptions. As such, it ranks alongside Antic HayEyeless in Gaza, and Point Counter Point.”

“[Simon Vance]’s unabridged reading of Huxley’s first novel is a triumph of one man’s vocal capacities…[Vance’s] vocal acrobatics in portraying the cast of characters…makes for dazzling aural entertainment. Otherwise fatuous goings-on become intriguing shenanigans, and the characters’ psychological portraits are rendered accurately through the unique voices [Vance] assigns them. With each change of the five cassettes, the listener is more captivated.”
