As a toddler, in a room illuminated only by the flames of a fallen candle, Jacobia Tiptree watched a man kill her mother. Jake once believed that man to be her father. Now, thirty-five years after the murder, as the real killer’s long-delayed trial is about to begin, the defendant has vanished.

Jake tries to distract herself from murder with the constant attempts to keep her 1823 federal-style fixer-upper from tumbling down on her head. But when her best friend’s infant daughter suddenly goes missing, Jake feels her dark past wrapping itself around her, and needless to say, it’s nowhere near as charming as her rickety old house.

Sarah Graves lives with her husband in an 1823 Federal-style house in Eastport, Maine, where her mystery novels are set. When she is not scraping, painting, glazing, sanding, hammering, or otherwise repairing (or failing to repair!) the old house, she is working on her next cozy mystery.

Lindsay Ellison is a narrator, producer, director, editor, performer, teacher, and a published and recorded songwriter and poet. She has narrated hundreds of audiobooks for the Library of Congress and the Perkins School for the Blind. She is an improvisational storyteller and a spokesperson for art and literacy on several New England television stations, and she coaches the art of narration nationally.

Reviews

“Relentless pacing, an appealing heroine and perfectly loathsome antagonists will more than satisfy series fans.”

“This first-rate thriller features nail-biting suspense that ensnares the reader to the final page. Graves has written one of her best mysteries, full of courageous women and compelling action. Highly recommended.”

“Graves almost moves beyond the bounds of a typical cozy this time, with relentless dramatic action and steadily building suspense. Still, the comforts of home survive in the end.”
