Bo Tully is the sheriff of Blight County, Idaho, where law enforcement is usually pretty mundane: tracking down truants running away from school, picking up country boys who've had a few too many beers. But Tully gets a little more than the country norm when an ex-con calls with the startling news that there's a corpse draped across one of his fences. Tully needed a birthday present for his Pap (the retired sheriff) anyway, so the two of them head out to investigate the murder. In a tone that's wise-cracking one minute and the next, well, still wise-cracking, Tully and Pap use their wiles to figure out what's happening in this little and suddenly not-so-dull town.

Patrick F. McManus (1933–2018) was an author, a renowned outdoor writer, humorist, and longtime columnist for Outdoor Life and Field & Stream magazines. He wrote the popular Sheriff Bo Tully mystery series, as well as many other books, including four New York Times bestsellers: The Grasshopper Trap, The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw, Real Ponies Don’t Go Oink, and Rubber Legs and White Tail-Hairs.

Charles Leggett, AudioFile Earphones Award–winning narrator, is based in Seattle where he works onstage at Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, ACT, and Seattle Shakespeare Company, among many others. His voice work is also featured in the first two Dungeon Siege video games as well as in Hoyle’s Casino Empire.

Reviews

“Everybody should read Patrick McManus.”

“A good-natured comic mystery…[McManus] peoples his shaggy plot with a variety of vivid, quirky characters…It’s good, goofy fun.”

“Prolific, popular outdoorsman and humorist McManus departs from his trademark shaggy-dog stories with this novel set in current-day Idaho, the first in a new mystery series starring Blight County sheriff Bo Tully…On the seventy-fifth birthday of his father…a dead body turns up at the ranch of a family of ex-cons. Bo decides a murder investigation would be the perfect birthday present for Pap…Behind his hayseed cop exterior, Bo is smart, sneaky and relentless. Add lots of quirky suspects, crisscrossing motives and artery-clogging meals at Dave’s House of Fry, and McManus delivers a brisk, hilarious small town cop mystery.”

“One of the most entertaining mystery debuts in years.”
