The Strathcarrons have lived in splendor in Lednock Castle in Scotland for many generations, but they fall on hard times when the family fortune is depleted. An American guest at the castle, Larry Harwood, persuades the Earl of Strathcarron to travel to New York with him to make his fortune. Six months later, the earl returns a broken man, having lost the entire estate to the American’s creditors. The earl’s son and daughter, Ewen and Moira, hatch a desperate plan to save the castle and their very inheritance from the clutches of the American bank. They believe their only recourse is to make good marriages into wealthy families with the hope that they can bail out their father. “There is nothing for it. We will have marry for money.”Thus they head for London and its glittering social scene with the express purpose of not returning to Scotland until both have found suitable spouses. But things do not go as planned. Moira once again meets handsome Stuart Weston, and, in spite of her promise to her brother, she finds herself falling in love. Torn between her loyalty to her family and her heart’s desire, Moira wonders whether she will ever find true happiness, or will she be forced into a loveless marriage of convenience?

Barbara Cartland (1901–2000) was one of the world’s most prolific novelists, writing an amazing 723 books in her lifetime, of which no fewer than 644 were romantic novels. Worldwide sales of her books have approached or exceeded one billion copies. She wrote her first book at the age of twenty-one; it became an immediate bestseller. Between the ages of seventy-seven and ninety-seven, she increased her output and wrote an incredible four hundred romances, as the demand for them was so strong worldwide. She wrote her last book at the age of ninety-seven. Her books have always been immensely popular in the United States, where in 1976 a pair of them occupied numbers one and two in the B. Dalton bestsellers list—a feat never achieved before or since by any author. Cartland became a legend in her own lifetime and will be well remembered for years to come. Her books will always be treasured for their moral message, her pure and innocent heroines, her handsome and dashing heroes, her blissfully happy endings, and above all for her unwavering belief in the positive power of love.
