Learn moreFrom the fertile hills of a tiny village near Jerusalem to the elegant townhouses of Georgetown, Three Daughters is a historical saga that chronicles the lives, loves, and secrets of three generations of Palestinian Christian women.
Born in rural Palestine, just before the dawn of the twentieth century, Miriam adores her father and is certain his love will protect her, but she soon finds that tradition overrides love. Uprooted by war, Miriam enters a world where the old constraints slip away with thrilling and disastrous results. Miriamโs rebellious daughter, Nadia, is thrilled with the opportunity for a modern life that her elite education provides. But when she falls in love with an outsider, the clan reins her back with a shocking finality. Nijmeh, Nadia's daughter, is an only child and the path her father, the sheik, sets for her is fraught with difficulties, yet it prepares her for her ultimate journey to America, where she finds her future.
Each woman, in her own time and in her own way, experiences a world in transition through war and social change...and each must stretch the bounds of her loyalty, her courage, and her heart.
Revised edition: Previously published as Daughters, this edition of Three Daughters includes editorial revisions.
Consuelo Saah Baehr was born in El Salvador to French and Palestinian parents. At age five, she moved to Washington, DC, where her father and uncles ran Jean Matou, the prestigious boutique that was a favorite of First Ladies Bess Truman and Jackie Kennedy. She was inspired to write Three Daughters from hearing the history of her paternal grandparents who survived the rule of the Ottomans, the British Mandate, and ultimately found their future in America.
Consuelo is the author of several novels, nonfiction works, and a lively blog. She lives in East Hampton, NY, in a small cottage near the sea.
Reviews
“No fiction that I have read has illuminated the nation that was Palestine through the medium of the family saga...as does this absorbing novel. Like a landscape painter, Baehr skillfully paints the background and it becomes a palpable experience. I for one long to know what has happened to the village and its families in the last forty years.” —Washington Post Book World
“Engrossing...the story Baehr tells touches so deeply one is tempted to reread each page.” —Chicago Tribune
“A tapestry of complex fully-developed characters whose lives are filled with challenges and struggles.” —Chicago Sun-Times
“Sweeping, uncommonly stirring!” —Publishers Weekly
“Baehr, a Palestinian Christian herself, knows this world intimately...she succeeds at vividly capturing the lifestyles beliefs and traditions—both ancient and modern—of her people.” —Booklist
