A unique spin on the romance genre from New York Times bestselling author M. C. Beaton

I am going to die, Polly thought. The crowd clamored for a speech. Polly raised her hands, and they fell silent. From the foot of the gallows, she asked the spectators why she, a poor woman, should hang for theft, while the abbess of Covent Garden can commit murder on the souls of innocent country girls over and over again and yet go free—and then she condemned them to hell.

M. C. Beaton (1936–2019), hailed as the “Queen of Crime” by the Globe and Mail, was the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Agatha Raisin novels—the basis for the hit series on Acorn TV and public television—as well as the Hamish Macbeth series and the Edwardian Murder Mysteries featuring Lady Rose Summer. Born in Scotland, Beaton started her career writing historical romances under several pseudonyms.

Lizzie Stanton is a British actress who is based in both the United States and England. She was born in Sri Lanka and has since lived in the Philippines, England, Tanzania, and Canada. In 2009 Lizzie moved to the United States where she graduated with a BA in theater arts from Brown University. In the summer of 2013, Lizzie was selected to be an apprentice at the Tony Award–winning Williamstown Theatre Festival and recorded her first two audiobooks. Lizzie is now in London attending her one-year master of arts course in acting for the screen at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
