Set in the land of Zamonia, this exuberant, highly original fantasy from Walter Moers features an unlikely hero. Rumo is a little Wolperting—a domesticated creature somewhere between a deer and a dog—who will one day become the greatest hero in the history of Zamonia. Armed with Dandelion, his talking sword, he fights his way through the Overworld and the Netherworld. He meets Rala, a beautiful Wolperting female; Urs of the Snows, who thinks more of cooking than of fighting; Gornab the Ninety-Ninth, the demented king of Netherworld; Professor Ostafan Kolibri, who goes in search of the Non-Existent Teenies; Professor Abdullah Nightingale, inventor of the chest-of-drawers oracle; and, worst luck, the deadly Metal Maiden.

Astonishingly inventive, amusing, and engrossing, Rumo is a captivating story from the unique imagination of Walter Moers. Filled with humor, this novel puts a new spin on the usual epic fantasy. The comparisons are many—Douglas Adams, Lewis Carroll, J. K. Rowling, Dr. Seuss, and R. Crumb—but Moers is clearly an original. Long live Zamonia!

Walter Moers was born in 1957 and is a writer, cartoonist, painter, and sculptor. The world of Zamonia that he created is currently being adapted for the screen. He lives in Hamburg, Germany.

Reviews

Equal parts J. K. Rowling, Douglas Adams, and Shel Silverstein…a work of monumental silliness.

Exuberant…Full of sly humor, this rambunctious novel will appeal to fans tired of the usual epic fantasy.

A brilliantly imagined, well-executed jaunt through strange lands full of wild characters.

“Cross Lord of the Rings with Yellow Submarine, throw in...Monty Python, Douglas Adams, Shrek, and The Princess Bride.”

“Parodic and sincere, slapstick and heart-tugging by turns, Moers's novel has fresh things to say on the nature of heroism and nobility. As if Tom Robbins had been inspired to rewrite Tolkien, Moers manages to imbue classic sword-and-sorcery motifs with his off-kilter worldview.”

“Narrator Bronson Pinchot is remarkable. This audiobook contains a marathon twenty-four hours of story, and his performance keep listeners engaged throughout. Rumo is classic Moers—a riotously inventive fantasy with liberal doses of humor. Rumo is a sentient dog-deer hybrid who travels on a classic hero’s journey. Pinchot creates unique voices for dozens of characters, including robots, animals, humanoids, and demons, and he changes voices with whiplash speed. Even his delivery of narrative is infused with lively personality. Moers’ prose often includes long lists, and Pinchot imbues them with humor and not a small amount of snark. It’s a wild ride, but listeners will be anchored by Pinchot’s tour-de-force performance. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.”
