After firewalking in Polynesia, fundamentalist minister Alexander Hergensheimer never saw the world the same. Now called Alec Graham, he is in the middle of an affair with his stewardess, Margrethe, when natural disasters begin plaguing them. First, there is an impossible iceberg that wrecks the ship in the tropics; then, after being rescued by a Royal Mexican plane, they are hit by a double earthquake. To Alex, the signs are clear: Armageddon and the Day of Judgment are near. Somehow, he has to bring his beloved heathen, Margrethe, to a state of grace, for heaven would be no paradise without her. But time is growing short. And, while he is at it, there has to be a way to save the rest of the world.

Robert Anson Heinlein (1907ā€“1988) took a variety of jobs before beginning to write science fiction in 1939. He became the dominant science fiction writer of the modern era, a writer whose influence on the field was immense. He won science fictionā€™s Hugo Award for best novel seven times, and several of his books were New York Times bestsellers. In 1975 he received the first Grand Master Award for lifetime achievement.Ā

Richard PowersĀ has published thirteen novels. He is a MacArthur Fellow and received the National Book Award. His book,Ā The Overstory, won the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction.

Reviews

ā€œJobĀ is funny, exciting, and thought-provokingā€¦Read it!ā€

ā€œHeinleinā€™s done it againā€¦JobĀ is the best thing heā€™s written for years!ā€

ā€œI couldnā€™t put JobĀ downā€¦It is a gripping novel, one of the best.ā€

ā€œIn my opinion, this is the simply the finest Heinlein I have ever read!ā€

ā€œJobĀ is an exhilarating romp through the authorā€™s mental universe.ā€

ā€œThe authorā€™s willingness to push his assumptions to their limits is clearly in evidence hereā€¦it may, in fact, be his strongest work in nearly two decades.ā€

ā€œFire-and-brimstone religion is not a topic one expects to find in a science fiction novel, but, heck, why not? Itā€™s a treat to trot along with Heinlein as he creates with a madmanā€™s gleeā€”and a masterā€™s expertise.ā€

ā€œFunny, philosophical, sometimes scary, always gentle, the book is as inventive as anything Heinlein has written.ā€

ā€œHeinleinā€™s latest novel pits human faith against cosmic whim. Displaying both his crusty, irreverent humor and his genuine respect for the fate of his characters, this novel will please Heinleinā€™s legion of readers.ā€

“Heinlein’s back in form, with a most refreshing and satisfying blend of ideas and storytelling…A limber, complex, and economical novel that disarms and often compels—with Heinlein’ best theology-shaded fantasy since Stranger in a Strange Land.”
