Curtis Turner was the most dynamic stock-car racer of all time; he wrote the book on living fast and dying young. The first NASCAR celebrity, his life embodied all that made NASCAR a hit spectator sport: the adrenaline rush of the races, the potential for danger at every turn, and the charismatic, outrageous personality of a winner. He created drama at the racetrack and in his personal life, living the American Dream several times over before he died a violent and mysterious death at the young age of 46.
Edelstein's gripping biography thrillingly recreates the life of this American legend, from his days as a teenage moonshine runner in Virginia, through millions earned (and quickly spent) in fearless financial deals, to his incredible comeback after four years of being banned from the NASCAR circuit. Curtis Turner's life embodied everything that makes NASCAR the biggest spectator sport in American history. In gripping prose, and with full access to the files of Turner's widow, Edelstein thrillingly recreates the life of this American legend.
Robert Edelsteinย is the exclusive motor sports writer for TV Guide, where his stories are read by more NASCAR fans than any other writer in the country. He is also a contributor to Stuff, Blender, and A&E Biography, among other publications. He lives in New Jersey.
Rex Linn, a winner of the prestigious Audie Award for best narration in 2014, is an American film and television actor best known for his role as Frank Tripp in the television series CSI: Miami. Besides numerous other television roles, he has had roles in Django Unchained, Trial by Fire, and other major films. He was born and raised in the Texas panhandle and earned a BA in radio, television, and film from Oklahoma State University.
Reviews
“[Edelstein’s] impeccable biography of Turner, Full Throttle, kicks up dirt on NASCAR’s juiced-up early days.”
“Enthralling…Maybe one of the best ever racing biographies…Equal parts fascinating, tragic, heroic, and downright bizarre.”
“[The book] draws on concrete sourcing—based on Turner’s personal files—to give the book depth and perspective.”
“Rex Linn’s Southern drawl steers Turner’s story, which is wonderfully told in the present tense…Non-NASCAR fans will love this as much as those who appreciate the sport’s genesis.”
“In the NASCAR beginning, there was Curtis Turner, the ‘Babe Ruth of Stock Car Racing’…An excellent volume for libraries whose patrons have even only a passing interest in NASCAR.”
