A brilliant collection by SF master Terry Bisson

Bears Discover Fire is the first short-story collection by the most acclaimed science fiction writer of the decade, the author of such brilliant novels as Talking Man and Voyage to the Red Planet. It brings together nineteen of Terry Bisson's finest works for the first time in one volume, among them the darkly comic title story, which garnered some of the field's highest honors, including the Hugo, Nebula, Theodore Sturgeon, and Locus Awards.

Terry Bisson is an American science fiction and fantasy author. Highly celebrated for his short stories, heā€™s won several awards, including the Hugo and Nebula. He lives in California.

Janis IanĀ is a singer, songwriter, and author. She is best known for her 1975 hit single,Ā ā€œAt Seventeen,ā€ which won a Grammy Award. She won a second Grammy in 2013 for the narration of her autobiography, Societyā€™s Child.

Stefan Rudnicki is an award winning audiobook narrator, director and producer. He was born in Poland and now resides in Studio City, California. He has narrated more than three hundred audiobooks and has participated in over a thousand as a writer, producer, or director. He is a recipient of multiple Audie Awards and AudioFile Earphones Awards as well as a Grammy Award, a Bram Stoker Award, and a Ray Bradbury Award. He received AudioFileā€™s award for 2008 Best Voice in Science Fiction and Fantasy. Along with a cast of other narrators, Rudnicki has read a number of Orson Scott Card's best-selling science fiction novels. He worked extensively with many other science fiction authors, including David Weber and Ben Bova. In reviewing the twentieth anniversary edition audiobook of Cardā€™s Ender's Game, Publishers Weekly stated, "Rudnicki, with his lulling, sonorous voice, does a fine job articulating Ender's inner struggle between the kind, peaceful boy he wants to be and the savage, violent actions he is frequently forced to take." Rudnicki is also a stage actor and director.

Kristoffer Tabori made his screen debut when he was six years old and appeared on Broadway for the first time at age sixteen. He has garnered numerous honors for his stage, screen, television, and radio acting and directing, including an Emmy and three Earphones Awards. His first solo narration won the 1993 Audie Award for best audiobook of the year.

Reviews

ā€œHis quick jabs to the funny bone and the intellect often are more powerful than many a lesser artistā€™s attempt at a knockout punch.ā€

ā€œBissonā€™s prose is a wonder of seemingly effortless control and precision; he is one of science fictionā€™s most promising short-story practitioners.ā€

ā€œIn this darkly comedic audio collection of futuristic stories, a dynamic trio of narrators brings diverse skills. The outlandish tales are written in an unnervingly realistic fashion, and the narrators provide an enticing combination of wit, verisimilitude, and empathy. Stefan Rudnickiā€™s somber rolling bass nicely offsets Kristoffer Taboriā€™s raspy charm, which works to great effect in their collaboration on ā€˜Theyā€™re Made Out of Meat.ā€™ Janis Ianā€™s robust tones and subtle delivery make her an excellent match for sinister and earnest characters alike, and she particularly shines in ā€˜Press Ann,ā€™ especially as the sentient ATM. Alternating narrators from story to story helps to separate worlds, while frank tones and attention to detail keep listeners anchored to the bizarre and disturbing events.ā€

ā€œThese nineteen stories showcase the varied talents of a skilled and as yet unjaded writer.ā€

ā€œBrilliantly originalā€¦Every story showcases Bissonā€™s keen intelligence and distinctive gift for deliciously wry proseā€¦Highly recommendable.ā€

ā€œBissonā€™s distinctive style and priceless imagination lift his work to an altogether more exalted plane.ā€
