An electrifying debut novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Some Girls

Jillian Lauren’s breathtakingly honest memoir, Some Girls, earned both critical praise and outstanding sales. In Pretty, Lauren delivers on her promise as a “natural storyteller” (Los Angeles Weekly) with a powerful novel about a broken girl looking to be saved.

Bebe Baker is an ex-everything: ex-stripper, ex-Christian, ex–drug addict, ex–pretty girl.

It’s been one year since the car accident that killed her boyfriend left her scarred and shaken. Flanked by an eccentric posse of friends, she is serving out a self-imposed sentence at a halfway house while trying to finish cosmetology school. Amid the rampant diagnoses, over-medication, compulsive eating, and acrylic nails of Los Angeles, Bebe looks for something to believe in before something—her past, the dangerously magnetic men in her life, her own bad choices—knocks her off course again.

Jillian Lauren, the author of the true crime book Behold the Monster, has also written the novel Pretty and the memoirs Some Girls and Everything You Ever Wanted. She has an MFA degree from Antioch University.

Julia Whelan grew up in the Pacific Northwest, but currently resides in Los Angeles. She is a former child actor, having appeared in multiple television shows, most notably ABC's Once and Again. After receiving her college degree, she returned to acting and is pursuing a career in the film industry, as well as creative writing. Her audiobook credits include romance, supernatural thrillers, young adult and adult fiction.

Reviews

“Jillian Lauren writes with stunning, furious authenticity about self-destruction and the bitter road toward redemption. Pretty will knock the breath right out of you.”

“Rich with storytelling, overmedication, and the inner life of [a] deeply troubled young woman…Lauren’s powerful narrative confronts what it is to be a pretty girl, how to accept your flaws, and how to rebuild a wrecked life. An outstanding fiction debut.”

“At times Bebe is maddening, but in Ms. Lauren’s skilled hands, she never stops being heart-wrenchingly sympathetic.”

“Well crafted, quick, and absorbing.”

“Utterly riveting. Jillian Lauren renders the taste and feel of wretched excess—be it sex, drugs, food, or Los Angeles—with a savage veracity and style all her own…Jillian Lauren is the real deal.”

Pretty is the real deal, a harrowing journey from darkness to light to real life. Bebe’s unflinching, street-level search for salvation absolutely floored me, and Jillian Lauren’s writing shimmers throughout with wit and authenticity.”
