Learn moreFatal Forecast chronicles a dramatic fight for survival aboard two small fishing boats that were caught in a horrific surprise storm off of Cape Cod. Soon after the Fair Wind and the Sea Fever reached the fishing ground at Georges Bank, they were hit with hurricane-force winds and massive ninety-foot waves that battered the boats for hours and made it impossible to turn back. The Fair Wind soon capsized, drowning all but one of the crewmembers. The Sea Fever was nearly torn apart.
Here is the hour-by-hour account of the struggles faced by the boats’ crewmembers, including the incredible ordeal of Ernie Hazard, who endured three days in a lifeboat in open water. The book also details the dramatic rescue attempts made by the Coast Guard on a day in which it received more mayday calls than any other in New England history.
Michael J. Tougias is the author of many true rescue stories for young readers and adults, including the New York Times bestselling The Finest Hours: The True Story of a Heroic Sea Rescue; A Storm Too Soon: A Remarkable True Survival Story in 80-Foot Seas; and Into the Blizzard: Heroism at Sea During the Great Blizzard of 1978. A frequent lecturer at schools, colleges, and libraries, Tougias divides his time between Massachusetts and Florida.
Jeff Cummings, as an audiobook narrator, has won both an Earphones Award and the prestigious Audie Award in 2015 for Best Narration in Science and Technology. He is also a twenty-year veteran of the stage, having worked at many regional theaters across the country, from A Contemporary Theatre in Seattle and the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta to the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City and the International Mystery Writers’ Festival in Owensboro, Kentucky. Reviews
“Tougias spins a marvelous and terrifying yarn…This is a breathtaking book.”
“Deserves a place as a classic survival at sea.”
“A meticulously researched and vividly told true story that is by turns tragic, thrilling, and inspiring.”
“[A] dramatic, pared-down account…Tougias smartly leavens his spare narrative with similar worst-case scenarios that resulted when other seamen miscalculated the sea’s wrathful power.”
“A passionately recounted peril-at-sea adventure…described with excruciating intensity…A blustery seafarer’s delight, rendered with gusto.”
