From Aristotle to Wittgenstein and Zizek, 50 Philosophy Classics provides a lively entry point to the field of philosophy. Analyses of key works by Descartes, Schopenhauer, Hegel, Heidegger, and Nietzsche also show how philosophy helped shape the thinking and events of the last 150 years. The list also includes 20th century greats including de Beauvoir, Foucault, Kuhn, and Sartre, along with contemporary philosophy including the writings and ideas of Peter Singer, Noam Chomsky, Harry Frankfurt, and Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
50 Philosophy Classics explores key writings that have shaped the discipline and impacted the real world. From Aristotle, Plato, and Epicurus in ancient times, to John Stuart Millโ€™s manifesto for individual freedom and Ralph Waldo Emersonโ€™s struggle to understand fate as person versus the universe. Most notably, Butler-Bowdon takes readers beyond the twentieth century to introduce contemporary thinkers like Slavoj Zizek, who suggests that the fight for food and water, a biogenetic revolution, and social indicate the apocalyptic end of global liberal capitalism.

Tom Butler-Bowdon is the author of seven books including 50 Politics Classics (2015), 50 Philosophy Classics (2013) and 50 Success Classics (2004). Bringing important ideas to a wider audience, his award-winning 50 Classics series has been read by over a million people and is in twenty-three languages. The 50 Classics concept is based on the idea that every subject or genre will contain at least fifty books that encapsulate its knowledge and wisdom. By creating a list of those landmark titles, then providing commentaries that note the key themes and assess the importance of each work, readers learn about valuable books they may not have discovered otherwise. Tom is a graduate of the London School of Economics (International Political Economy) and the University of Sydney (Government and History). Prior to becoming a writer, he was a policy analyst for The Cabinet Office and National Parks Service in Sydney and worked in a variety of U.K. businesses. He lives in Oxford, England.
