Sir Stirling Moss OBE is widely acknowledged as the greatest all-round racing driver in the history of the sport. He became a professional driver in 1948, and in the course of his 14-year career won 212 races, including 16 Formula One Grand Prix. He won the epic, 1000-mile Mille Miglia race in 1955, driving at an average of over 97 miles per hour on public roads. The same year, he also won the Targa Florio and the Tourist Trophy, and in 1958-1960 he won the 1000km Nurburgring three times. He retired in 1962 after a near-fatal crash, but made occasional comebacks until 2011 when he finally gave up racing, aged 81. He was made a Knight Bachelor for services to racing in the 2000 New Year's Honour's List and in 2006, motorsport's governing body the FIA awarded him a gold medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to motorsport.
