You are probably familiar with the popularized stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," but have you heard the original unabridged versions by Washington Irving? His skillfully written and colorful tales have much more meaning and depth. In "Rip Van Winkle," Irving makes a profound social comment about the changes that were happening in his America, and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" isn't just a chilling tale about the Headless Horseman but an enchanting story about two rival suitors.

Equally enjoyable tales of suspense and the supernatural included in this collection are:

โ€”"The Spectre Bridegroom"

โ€”"The Adventure of the German Student"

โ€”"The Devil and Tom Walker"

โ€”"The Adventure of the Mason"

โ€”"Legend of the Rose of Alhambra"

โ€”"The Governor and the Notary"

โ€”"Governor Manco and the Soldier"

This collection will demonstrate just why Washington Irving is widely recognized as the "Father of American Literature."

Washington Irving (1783โ€“1859) was an American author, short story writer, essayist, poet, travel book writer, biographer, and columnist. He is best known for writing the stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Early on, he was a contributor to the Morning Chronicle, published Salmagundi, and served as editor of Analetic magazine in Philadelphia and New York. In 1809, he published the comical A History of New York under the name "Dietrich Knickerbocker." Eleven years later, he published a collection of stories entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., which allowed him to become a full-time writer. Other books written by Irving are Bracebridge Hall, Chronicles of the Conquest of Granada, A Tour of the Prairies, and The Life of George Washington, a five-volume title.

Donada Peters is one of AudioFile magazine's Golden Voices and has won over a dozen AudioFile Earphones Awards. As a narrator, Donada has recorded more than 500 titles. "Peters keeps the listener waiting to hear what happens next." -AudioFile
