I'd never pictured a vampire story that started in the United States in the 1820s - it made for a unique plot as opposed to a pure Eastern European origin story...The prose is simply lovely. I enjoyed Holland's use of imagery and characterization to develop a gothic world that an unwilling vampire is forced to move through between her "birth" and the present. Saskia Maarleveld's voice highlights the introspective nature of young Anna, who eventually adopts the name of Collette as she moves through the centuries. Our protagonist is a tortured soul who wishes to understand not only herself but also the motivations of humanity, from its brutality to innocent beauty. ”
