“One of the first books I ever came across as child that was not a fairytale, not animated animals, and whose original artwork captivated me. The original mean girls, Hundred Dresses tells the story of 2 school girls who tease a less fortunate school mate, based on their own assumptions about her strange behavior. The whole story has a depression era feel that permeates the tone, the clothes, mannerisms--all leading down the three girls to think more deeply about who they call friend, and how to be one.”

This Newbery Honor classic, illustrated by a Caldecott Medalist, is a beautifully written tribute to the power of kindness, acceptance, and standing up for what's right.
Wanda Petronski is ridiculed by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress every day. She claims she has one hundred dresses at home, but everyone knows she doesnโt. When Wanda is pulled out of school one day, the class feels terrible, and classmate Maddie decides that she is ""never going to stand by and say nothing again.""
A timeless, gentle tale about bullies, bystanders, and having the courage to speak up.
Eleanor Estes (1906-1988) grew up in West Haven, Connecticut, which she renamed Cranbury for her classic stories about the Moffat and Pye families. A childrenโs librarian for many years, she launched her writing career with the publication of The Moffats in 1941. Two of her outstanding books about the MoffatsโRufus M. and The Middle Moffatโwere awarded Newbery Honors, as was her short novel The Hundred Dresses. She won the Newbery Medal for Ginger Pye.
