After losing her fifty-nine-year-old husband to cancer, Dee Brestin wondered if her life was over as well. She ached for God’s comfort but felt utterly alone. Then she discovered a secret that suffering souls through the centuries have learned: She began using psalms and classic hymns to speak the truth to her fretful soul. The truths carried by these timeless songs—many of which Brestin includes in this book—can calm the most fretful spirit. They invite the wounded heart to be quiet before God, to rest like a child in the arms of a loving parent. Each of us must travel down roads of bereavement, betrayal, and broken dreams. The God of All Comfort will help readers find their way into the arms of God. With compassion and spiritual wisdom, Brestin draws on the difficult beauty of her own story as well as her skills as a Bible teacher to offer companionship, comfort, and hope. Data

Reviews

Simply put, I loved this book. The writing is beautiful, lyrical, and deeply biblical, inviting us to experience our favorite psalms and hymns through the eyes of an honest, grieving woman who cried out to God and was tenderly comforted. Tears were never far from my eyes as I read: tears of joy, of sorrow, of repentance, of gladness. For all of us who need to be assured we are not alone, The God of All Comfort is a wonderful, worshipful read! -- Liz Curtis Higgs In God of All Comfort Dee Brestin does not camouflage physical and emotional pain, or spiritualize about the guttural groanings of the soul. Instead, she uses her suffering as a platform for revealing the mysterious, unstoppable, profound, inexplicable, all-encompassing love of God. This book reveals the powerful role music plays in our pain. When we hurt too much to read or talk or pray, biblically based lyrics and melody wash over us with tender waves of fresh air, adjusted perspective, renewed hope, and with the poignant truth that we’re not home yet. When my son was a toddler, I threw out his favorite blanket. It was tattered and dilapidated, with dingy balls of abused fabric hanging by threads on this worn out covering. Jason rescued his treasure from the garbage can and hugged it to his chest, as I heard him pray, ‘Jesus, you’re just like a blanket and I won’t ever stop loving you.’ Dee’s book will be an instant classic for those who are hurting. As you read this masterpiece of the heart, may you crawl into His arms and experience the God of all comfort.” -- Carol Kent Expand reviews
