This collection includes:• Silas Marner by George Eliot, read by Dame Judi Dench• Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence, read by Sir Ian McKellen• Bleak House by Charles Dickens, read by Sir John Gielgud

Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) is regarded as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He published many novels and poetry volumes during his lifetime, including Sons and Lovers and Women in Love, but is best known for his infamous Lady Chatterley's Lover. Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and grew up in poverty. This experience influenced Oliver Twist, the second of his fourteen major novels, which first appeared in 1837. When he died in 1870, he was buried in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey as an indication of his huge popularity as a novelist, which endures to this day.
