The Dutch House

A Novel

By Ann Patchett
Narrated by: Tom Hanks
Length: 9 hours 52 minutes

The Dutch House

“Any novel by Ann Patchett is going to include little sparks of description that catch in the imagination, moments of dialogue so good that you forget later you weren't there, and stories that capture your heart as well as a zeitgeist. In The Dutch House, Patchett creates a narrator standing at the intersection of poverty, dream, privilege, and family, confused by the gap between his sister's memory of hardship and his own experience of wealth - and loss. Tom Hanks narrates this audiobook fully in character, his pacing capturing the main character's moments of realization: the cook had a husband? The strangely designed, luxurious Dutch House had shaped his relationship with his sister far more after they couldn't go back! His mother and his sister shared taste in books? How? His children are curious about things he'd never thought important! ...It's a novel beautifully suited to our cultural moment - a time of economic loss and uncertainty about basically everything except the bonds of love we want to protect - and an audio performance perfect for the novel. Five stars and two thumbs up!”

The Body

A Guide for Occupants

By Bill Bryson
Narrated by: Bill Bryson
Length: 14 hours 4 minutes

The Body

“At home while peeling wallpaper or making diner—or just closing my eyes for a while—a non-fiction audio book is a perfect companion, especially if it’s teaching me something as well as being entertaining. The Body: A Guide For Occupants by Bill Bryson, narrated by Bill Bryson, is exactly that kind of book. Bryson’s voice is genial, sometimes humble, and yet informative and authoritative, and I was pleased that he choice to narrate it. And the subject is me! Well, sort of. But what could be more compelling than learning about this body that has taken care of me for, well, many years now. And even the insights that might not relate to me at this moment are fascinating. I kept thinking about my friends and how this book could help me to better understand their aches and pains and medical conditions. And, maybe most importantly, by listening to this book I became amazed at the idea that these bodies of ours do so much to keep us healthy and alive—and to understand how we should be helping our bodies to do so. I’d love to quote all the facts I’ve learned—such as information about viruses, and the odd facts that seem unbelievable, such as the Anton-Babinski syndrome, where people who are blind refuse to believe it—but that’s why you should listen to this book, to find these gems for yourself.”

The Reckless Oath We Made

By Bryn Greenwood
Narrated by: Alex McKenna, Kirby Heyborne, Adenrele Ojo, MacLeod Andrews, Mark Bramhall, Maxwell Glick, Georgette Perna, Amanda Carlin & Kaleo Griffith
Length: 14 hours 42 minutes

The Reckless Oath We Made

“Greenwood brings these characters -- from Zee with her hard-luck life and equally rough family to autistic Gentry and his quest to be a K-night -- to life with her words, but it was the full cast audio that make them real for me. Each narrator -- one for each character that had a chapter -- brought something new and unique to the character's voice, and that just added depth the whole story. Highly recommended, but especially on audio!”

Red at the Bone

A Novel

By Jacqueline Woodson
Narrated by: Jacqueline Woodson, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Peter Francis James, Shayna Small & Bahni Turpin
Length: 3 hours 52 minutes

Red at the Bone

“Although you can read Jacqueline Woodson’s newest novel over the course of one evening, there is nothing breezy about the richness of its story, nothing short about the depth of its characters, nothing quick about the way this book stays with you after you finish reading. Told through five distinct voices, Red at the Bone tracks an African-American family through time and place as an unexpected pregnancy upends and reshapes family and class expectations as well as individual trajectories. Ultimately, the novel is about legacy in every sense of the word. And since Woodson’s writing packs the emotional punch of an epic in a novella number of pages, the legacy of her book is to be read over and over and over again.”

A Nearly Normal Family

A Novel

By M.T. Edvardsson & Rachel Willson-Broyles
Narrated by: Emily Watson, Georgia Maguire & Richard Armitage
Length: 12 hours 30 minutes

A Nearly Normal Family

“A Nearly Normal Family is a slow-burning legal thriller that had me listening to it every free moment I had. There are three narrators in the twisted family drama - the Father, the Daughter, and the Mother. They each tell their own version of the time and events. There is a difference though. Each weaves his/her story with lies and deception. The core of the plot centers around the 16-year-old daughter who is accused of murdering a man twice her age. The father of the accused is a pastor and the mother is a lawyer. The reader must decipher truth among the lies and cover-ups. There are quite a few twists and turns along the way. I enjoyed this very much. I found myself thinking about it throughout the day and couldn't wait to get back to it. The narration is top-notch. I highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading more books by the author.”

By Alex North
Narrated by: Christopher Eccleston
Length: 9 hours 38 minutes

The Whisper Man

“A creepy, sinister, can’t-put-it-down story of a town that survives and then relives the crimes of a child serial killer. For those who love psychological thrillers (with the absence of gore but plenty of plot twists and turns), The Whisper Man is a grand ride into the minds of those who kill and those who are victims. You’ll find yourself looking over your shoulder when reading this book. Don’t stand too close to an open window...”

This Tender Land

By William Kent Krueger
Narrated by: Scott Brick
Length: 14 hours 19 minutes

This Tender Land

“Historical fiction in the hands of a genius storyteller. A band of vagabond children on an epic journey to find their way during the great depression. Their search for home, for peace, for family, for identity is one of the most beautiful stories I have read in a very long time. This is Mark Twain meets Dickens, and then some. Extensively researched and eloquently told, this is storytelling at its finest. Yes, I used the word “storytelling” twice. But there is no better example of this beautiful art form. The only thing missing is a crackling fire and a creaking rocker, as this tale unfolds. “Lucky us”, as Mose would say.”

The World That We Knew

A Novel

By Alice Hoffman
Narrated by: Judith Light
Length: 10 hours 8 minutes

The World That We Knew

“A devastating WWII story with a silvery ribbon of magical realism woven in, this could be the love child of All the Light We Cannot See and The Nightingale. Although filled with unimaginable loss and destruction fueled by hatred that we still struggle to comprehend, it provides a much needed contrast showing how redemption is found through tenacity, bravery, hope, and love. After Lea, Ettie, and Ava escape Berlin, we follow the orbits of multiple lives as their paths parallel and intersect at different moments in German occupied France.”

The Need

Length: 6 hours 19 minutes

The Need

“THE NEED is a thriller about the sheer emotional and physical intensity of mothering and perhaps a rip in the time space continuum. Phillips is a gifted lyrical creator of worlds. Not for the faint of heart and wonderfully absorbing.”

Savage Appetites

Four True Stories of Women, Crime, and Obsession

By Rachel Monroe
Narrated by: Jayme Mattler
Length: 8 hours 27 minutes

Savage Appetites

“Savage Appetites: Four True Stories of Women, Crime and Obsession explores obsession, crime and violence and why we as a culture, specifically women, are fascinated by it. Monroe goes beyond the gruesome details of violent crime using not only her experience as a reporter, but also personal narrative and social examination. She shines a light on some of the most gruesome murders and the rippling consequences that occur long after justice, or what we think is justice, is done. If you liked I'll Be Gone In the Dark, you will love this one. I could not stop listening!”

The Only Plane in the Sky

An Oral History of September 11, 2001

By Holter Graham & Garrett M. Graff
Narrated by: A Full 45-Person Cast
Length: 15 hours 54 minutes

The Only Plane in the Sky

“This is a book you really need to hear instead of read. I was an adult with 2 children on 9/11 and I learned so much listening to this. This is more than just people recounting what happened to them on that dark day, it is a reenactment from key people told in chronological order. You get the where and learn exactly what they experienced. There is a full cast of people retelling their stories and their observations. It was heartbreaking but also eye-opening. Although I lived through this, I gained a better understanding of those affected by the events first hand. The people that were right there tell you their view and how the responded. Listening to this I was riveted. The scope of 9/11 is bigger than just one person, or a few people. It encompasses every American. This book does a fantastic job of putting you right there.”

The Chain

By Adrian McKinty
Narrated by: January LaVoy
Length: 10 hours 8 minutes

The Chain

“Adrian McKinty goes deviously dark with her thriller, The Chain. Psychologically exhausting, The Chain drags the reader around like a run-away horse drags a rider! Fans of suspense should put this book right at the top of their TBR piles. Really well read by January LaVoy, it's a great book to listen to on Libro.fm.”

Imaginary Friend

By Stephen Chbosky
Narrated by: Christine Lakin
Length: 24 hours 31 minutes

Imaginary Friend

“I will admit I was a little afraid to download this one when I saw how many hours I had in store for me but I just couldn't resist a creepy tale on these brisk October nights! Chbosky weaves a fantastic tale of epic good versus evil. A child goes missing, only to turn up 6 days later, completely unharmed but with no memory of his time in the woods. But he is different, smarter, more confident, prone to illness and possibly going crazy. As his mother fights to keep him safe the entire town seems to fall prey to a mysterious illness that seems to have happened once before--ending only with the disappearance of another little boy into the same woods. Will Christopher be able to save the town (and maybe the world) before his time runs out? Will the Nice Man triumph over the Hissing Lady? The Imaginary World begins to bleed into the Real World as Christmas approaches and the town fights for it's very soul.”
