Tangerine

“A taut psychological thriller set against the lush landscape of Tangier in the 1950’s. When Lucy hears the news that her estranged best friend from college has moved to Tangier with her new husband, she books a ticket to follow her. They haven’t spoken since ‘the accident’, but maybe that’s all water under the bridge? Speak No Evil

A Novel

By Uzodinma Iweala
Narrated by: Prentice Onayemi & Julia Whelan
Length: 6 hours 21 minutes

Speak No Evil

“'This is who I am.' 'This is what happened to me.' These are the simplest of expressions, yet the ability to speak them fully is a privilege not shared by the teenaged protagonists of this novel. Nigerian immigrant and Harvard-accepted aspiring doctor Niru is not able to tell his conservative religious parents that he is gay. The daughter of D.C.'s political elite, Meredith is not able to tell the world what really happened in an alley outside a bar on a hot spring night. Speak No Evil describes how loving relationships are strained, how trust is shattered, and how bodies can be broken when the truth is silenced. This heartbreakingly beautiful story will stay with you for a long time.”

The Bookshop on the Shore

A Novel

By Jenny Colgan
Narrated by: Eilidh Beaton
Length: 13 hours 10 minutes

The Bookshop on the Shore

“This audiobook is absolutely stunning. It’s simple, somehow, with characters who all have hidden depths, and slow-burn romance that makes the last quarter of the audiobook impossible to stop listening to. Prepare for a couple dark themes, but some beautifully warm ones, as well. And the voice actor is utterly incredible, giving each character their own distinct voices and tones. 10/10.”

News of the World

A Novel

By Paulette Jiles
Narrated by: Grover Gardner
Length: 6 hours 17 minutes

News of the World

News of the World may be slight in size but it's expansive in story, scenery and characters. I found myself cheering out loud for Captain Kidd and Johanna at times and crying at others. The narration by Grover Gardener greatly added to my enjoyment of this book. He did an amazing job of capturing the characters of Captain Kidd and Johanna.”

The Dutch House

A Novel

By Ann Patchett
Narrated by: Tom Hanks
Length: 9 hours 52 minutes

The Dutch House

“Meeting the Conroy family and stepping into their elaborate Dutch house—part museum, part home, with all its secrets and charm, comfort and sadness—enthralled me as the mystery unfolded like a gentle call to arms. From poverty to wealth and from wealth to poverty, we see through Danny’s eyes the struggle to hold the family together against grief, greed, and the heartbreak of losing all that once bound them. Patchett paints a masterpiece here; there’s no looking away. It lingers in your imagination long after the story has been told.”

Queenie Malone's Paradise Hotel

A Novel

By Ruth Hogan
Narrated by: Jane Collingwood
Length: 9 hours

Queenie Malone's Paradise Hotel

“This wonderful story is told alternately from the point of view of a young child, Tilly, and from the point of view of her adult self, Tilda. Tilly, who may or may not see ghosts, introduces a mixed bag of mostly lovable characters and asks a whole lot of questions. Did her mother kill her father and abandon her? Who is the man in the black hat? Why couldn’t she stay with Queenie? After her mother’s death, Tilda returns to Queenie’s Paradise Hotel and mysteries are revealed as Tilda explores her mother’s diaries, filling in the empty spaces in her past. Jane Collingwood effortlessly and believably narrates both Tilly’s delightfully honest, and often humorous childish voice and Tilda’s angst-ridden adult voice. I highly recommend this book!”

Such a Fun Age

By Kiley Reid
Narrated by: Nicole Lewis
Length: 9 hours 58 minutes

Such a Fun Age

“What a beautifully rich and nuanced book! Emira, a mid-twenties educated but slightly driftless woman is working 2 part time jobs still trying to find her passion. She find joy in her part time babysitting job, finding her three year old charge a delightfully odd little person who keeps her interested. But things turn complicated when she is asked to take her charge to the local grocery store late at night and is accosted by the store security guard and a "well meaning" patron. Accused of kidnapping and unable to leave Emira holds her dignity and stands up for herself as another patron films the incident. Emira wants nothing more than to put the incident behind her but those closest to her have other ideas of what is best for her. This novel packs an emotional punch, making us question our own motives and wondering if we really have our loved ones best interests at heart. A perfect book group pick for those who like to focus on character driven stories.”

Educated

A Memoir

By Tara Westover
Narrated by: Julia Whelan
Length: 12 hours 9 minutes

Educated

“This memoir is unlike anything I've ever read, yet I fear that there are others who were raised in circumstances like Tara Westover. Westover documents her childhood devoid of education beyond the family's radical, extreme, doomsday religion with chilling detail as if investigating herself as a case study will help explain how she escaped. Highly recommend.”
