Tangerine

By Christine Mangan
Narrated by Barrie Kreinik & Erin Mallon /  9 hours 28 minutes

Tangerine

“A hauntingly horrific debut novel with hints of a Hitchcockian twist, “Tangerine” by Christine Mangan is the tragic tale of 1950’s socialite Alice Shipley and her destitute friend, Lucy Mason, college roommates forever damaged by one dark and stormy night. One year later, a lucky Lucy finds a frail Alice self-medicating in Morocco with a free-loading husband by her side, desperately fighting the demons threatening her descent into madness. Could Lucy be Alice’s lucky charm and her missing link to an exciting life exploring the world without restraint or is she the manipulative mastermind determined to destroy Alice’s life once again?”

The Book of M

A Novel
By Peng Shepherd
Narrated by James Fouhey & Emily Woo Zeller /  17 hours 6 minutes

The Book of M

“Peng Shepherd’s The Book of M is as mysterious as it is fantastical. Beginning in India before spreading worldwide, almost like a magical epidemic, people are suddenly losing their shadows. For those that do, it always follows that they begin to forget. Whether slowly or rapidly, the forgetting always befalls those who have become “shadowless.” And in this new world of forgetting and mis-remembering, the natural world also goes under a metamorphosis: giant “death kites” patrol the skies, the Statue of Liberty terrorizes all of New York, and wolves begin to speak like humans. All this and more befalls the world amid the landscape of lost memories. Chilling, heart-warming, thrilling, and mesmerizing are all the ways I would describe The Book of M. Narrators James Fouhey and Emily Woo Zeller do wonderfully for the audio book adaption. Emily is touching as the first-person narration of female character Max, while James’ handling of the third-person narrations of the rest of the cast is a remarkable feat.”

Alice Isn't Dead

A Novel
By Joseph Fink
Narrated by Jasika Nicole /  8 hours 43 minutes

Alice Isn't Dead

“Joseph Fink is my hero for making extreme anxiety a superpower and something from which a person can draw strength. Like the Welcome to Night Vale novels, Alice Isn’t Dead evinces a gentleness throughout the story, but as with Keisha, the protagonist, don’t mistake that for weakness. This novel is a road trip into the depths of human love even in the midst of experiencing inexplicable and weird horrors. It will linger with you long after you finish reading it.”

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy

By Mackenzi Lee
Narrated by Moira Quirk /  11 hours 16 minutes

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy

“A fantastic tale of the challenges women face in a mans world. Even though it is set in a time when women wore petticoats, the story is fun and relatable. I recommend this for adults and young adults alike. The reader is very enjoyable!”

How to Invent Everything

A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler
By Ryan North
Narrated by Ryan North /  12 hours 55 minutes

How to Invent Everything

“I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. In my opinion, it is not always a good thing when an author narrates their own work, but in this instance it was spot on. What impressed me was how well he managed to describe graphs, tables, and illustrations from the written version. That said, I will admit to having skipped past a couple of tables that became tedious listening. I can only imagine how much fun he had reading them. There is humor from start to finish, and I especially enjoyed his handling of famous quotes at the beginning of each section. Since the book is a guide on how to rebuild civilization faster than it developed naturally, the reader (who is ostensibly trapped in the past due to a broken time machine, for which this book is the 'repair' manual) gets to take credit for 'discovering' and 'inventing' all the great advances in history. In keeping with this, all famous quotes are attributed to "You". This is followed by an additional 'also' accreditation to a personage from the 'original' timeline. What is also educational is that as each technological stride is explained, the author informs not only when this it first appeared, but how much sooner it COULD have based on previous advances. A 'technology tree' appendix (which is available on the author's website with all the other described visual aids) lays out exactly which technologies are necessary to take the next step on your path to becoming the most important person in history. Shortly after I finished the book, one of my children asked me several question I was able to answer as if I had always known (rather than just learned it myself 48 hours previously). This is a great resource if you've ever had a desire to know a little bit more about the 'hows' and 'whys' behind the workings of civilization”

Children of Blood and Bone

Legacy of Orisha: Book #1
By Tomi Adeyemi
Narrated by Bahni Turpin /  17 hours 44 minutes

Children of Blood and Bone

“A sprawling fantasy teeming with deep and meaningful magic. One of the things I like most about this debut is that it raises very real and important issues of our time through multiple character's perspectives. No character is one-dimensional, and every character must learn from failure and introspection to become who they were meant to be.”

Circe

“This sweeping tale of the gods and heroes of Greek mythology as seen through the eyes of a minor goddess had me from the first chapter. I listened to this as an audiobook from our audio vendor, Libro.fm. The brilliant narrator was the 29-year-old Welsh film actress, Perdita Weeks.”

The Wild Robot Escapes

The Wild Robot: Book #2
By Peter Brown
Narrated by Kathleen McInerney /  4 hours 36 minutes

The Wild Robot Escapes

“Roz is back, and better than ever! After being refurbished, our dear robot gets shipped off to work for the Shareef family on their dairy farm. And since she’s no mere automaton, she proves to be an invaluable asset — not only to the cows she has befriended, but also to the Shareef children. Yet despite her newfound friends, she still yearns to be wild and free...and most of all, she wants to be reunited with her goose son, Brightbill. And so The Wild Robot Escapes! Peter Brown has once again crafted an effortlessly charming tale, with the narrator adding an extra dose of saccharine goodness. She reads with the soothing cadence of a mother reading a bedtime story, and the added ambiance/sound effects really draw you into the world.”

Dry

By Neal Shusterman & Jarrod Shusterman
Narrated by Jenni Barber, Noah Galvin, Michael Crouch, Kivlighan De Montebello, Neal Shusterman & Jarrod Shusterman /  11 hours 6 minutes

Dry

“In the near-future, the drought in SoCal has reached catastrophic proportions despite years of warnings and restrictions...and it becomes downright apocalyptic once a water supply deal falls through and the water is turned off entirely. The main story of Dry follows Alyssa, her brother, and their prepper neighbor as they try to survive in this new world while society crumbles around them. The Shustermen have clearly done their research when it comes to the effects of dehydration and desperation — something that is viscerally and terrifyingly conveyed throughout the book. Told through the point of view of several characters, the timely plot grabs you from page one and pulls you at a breakneck pace all the way through to the end, with each person having their own distinct voice and coping mechanisms. Just be sure to have a glass of water handy while you’re reading — you’ll need it.”

The Sisters of the Winter Wood

By Rena Rossner
Narrated by Ana Clements /  10 hours 45 minutes

The Sisters of the Winter Wood

“A magical, lush debut with fierce sisterly love at its core. Alternating chapters in both poetry and prose tell the story of Liba and Laya, two sisters that discover their family history is something straight out of a fairy tale: Liba, like her father is part bear, and Laya, like her mother is part swan. As each sister navigates their new abilities of transformation, so too must they learn how to protect each other when a mysterious group of merchants arrive in their village, selling magical fruit and spinning malicious, deadly lies. Sisters of the Winter Wood is a lush reworking of Christina Rossetti's The Goblin Market, but with deep characterization, historical details, and a magical setting, it is also utterly original. I was swept away in Rossner's book and you will be too! ”
