David's Picks

Remember that one kid growing up who was always stuck in a book? Yeah, that's David. On the plus side, it turns out that’s SUPER handy working at a bookstore. While he loves reading just about anything, his favorites are Science, SciFi, Fantasy, and Comics & Graphic Novels, in particular anything that takes place after the end of the world and any story where doors take you someplace other than the next room. His TBR piles currently serve as load-bearing structural supports throughout his house. He's been at Content since 2015 and it’s his happy place.

Firekeeper's Daughter

By Angeline Boulley
Narrated by: Isabella Star LaBlanc
Length: 14 hours 13 minutes

Firekeeper's Daughter

“This story of a young woman roped into a federal investigation of a drug ring tearing her Ojibwe community apart is riveting and sorrowful. Daunis is an 18 year old non-enrolled Ojibwe with plenty of ambition and skills and won't see a clear path to her future that doesn't involve working in her community. This book moved me in so many ways but Daunis' connection to her elders and their traditions really drove this plot. While her parents' choices keep her from acceptance and death seems to haunt her, Daunis stays focused on her values: preserving and protecting the Ojibwe way of life for the next 6 generations. I loved how Boulley wove the Anishinaabe language, traditions and teaching into this story without spelling it all out for non-Native readers. This book tells the story of some of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women (MMIW) and helps us connect with the stories more personally.”

Children of Blood and Bone

Legacy of Orisha: Book #1

By Tomi Adeyemi
Narrated by: Bahni Turpin
Length: 17 hours 44 minutes

Children of Blood and Bone

“Children of Blood & Bone, is a story told in a world where magic no longer exists. Years ago, this was not the case. Once, magic and the Gods were celebrated. Now, Diviners (those with Maji blood, but no magic) are treated poorly, and all the Maji have been killed. One of those including our main protagonist, Zélie’s, mother. Determined to find a way to bring back magic, Zélie, along with her brother Tzain, and Orïsha’s only princess, Amari (gone rogue), set out on a quest against all odds. Told from Zélie, Amari and Amari’s brother and crown prince, Inan’s viewpoints, Tomi Adeyemi weaves together a tale so beautifully and tragically relevant, it will leave you craving for answers and more.”

“The story of a band that experiences a meteoric rise and then comes apart. A great listen - the cast is fantastic. I wonder whether I would have enjoyed reading it as much as I did listening because the cast does such a great job.”

Humankind

A Hopeful History

By Rutger Bregman
Length: 11 hours 37 minutes

If you enjoyed Sapiens, then you’ll love Humankind.

“While I am not totally convinced at the author’s premise (starting with Hobbes vs Rousseau), I found this book to be well researched and insighful as the author presents and dismantles many of the cornerstones of modern life proporting that humankind is basically bad. His extended digging behind such behavioural foundations as “The Lord of the Flies”, The Stanford Prison Experiment and the Milgram experiment really made me ponder the old adage “sex sells”. The gorier and more lurid the outcome, the better we humans like it and the more we absorb these ideas that make us less human and definitely less kind. A timely read and one that I will continue to ruminate on while trying to be the better kind of human that Rutger Bregman believes us to be.”
