A modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice

By Curtis Sittenfeld
Narrated by: Cassandra Campbell
Length: 13 hours 20 minutes

Eligible

“It is a universally acknowledged truth that a retelling of Pride and Prejudice must be cleverly written and wickedly funny. Sittenfeld has accomplished that and more with her fantastic new novel. The Bennet sisters have been transported to modern day Cincinnati. Jane is a yoga instructor; Liz, a writer for a women's magazine; Lydia and Kitty do nothing but work out; and Mary spends most of her time in her room. The two older sisters live in New York, but have come home to check on Mr. Bennet, who is recovering from a heart attack. The storyline is one that will be familiar to most Austen readers, but with some extremely funny twists.”

Tiny Beautiful Things

Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar

By Cheryl Strayed
Narrated by: Cheryl Strayed
Length: 9 hours 39 minutes

Tiny Beautiful Things

“Before she was known as the author of Wild, Cheryl Strayed was the anonymous Dear Sugar on The Rumpus website – an agony aunt of sorts, if agony aunts were endowed with ruthless compassion, profound honesty, and excellent prose. Tiny Beautiful Things is a collection of these columns. After I listened to Dear Sugar, the podcast she shared with Steve Almond, I decided to give the audio of this a go. No regrets! It is moving and eloquent, and never predictable -- and the fact that she reads it herself means that her compassion comes through not only in her writing but in her voice.”

A novel

By Weike Wang
Narrated by: Julia Whelan
Length: 4 hours 52 minutes

Chemistry

“The unnamed narrator of Wang's winning and insightful novel is working on her PhD in synthetic organic chemistry, but the chemistry she really needs to learn is the one that makes relationships click. The prodigy daughter of high-achieving Chinese American parents, she's always strived to meet their demanding expectations. Then, suddenly, she just can't. Her lab work falters. She's unable to accept or decline her boyfriend's marriage proposal. But when she has a breakdown and loses in both academia and in love, she finally realizes how angry she is. Coming to terms with her past becomes her next project, and soon she can see her parents in a new light - and they aren't the fierce tiger couple they'd always seemed to be.”

Dept. of Speculation

By Jenny Offill
Narrated by: Jenny Offill
Length: 3 hours 9 minutes

Dept. of Speculation

“This one isn’t for everyone, but it is right up my alley, and there are many people who love it – hence its presence of many, many “best of 2014” lists. I think of it as a cross-genre prose poem/memoir of a marriage. Beautiful, heart-breaking, eminently quotable. Sometimes there is a reason everyone is climbing on the same bandwagon.”

The Roxy Letters

By Mary Pauline Lowry
Narrated by: Jayme Mattler
Length: 9 hours 39 minutes

The Roxy Letters

“A racy and smart update for those who enjoyed Bridget Jones’s Diary or other epistolary stories. Roxy’s series of letters to Everett, her sort of roommate/ex-boyfriend, stops being her only means of communication with him and transforms into an increasingly cathartic diary for Roxy to think about her personal roadblocks and document the escapades of her daily life. It captures the ennui of today’s overeducated and underemployed 20-somethings who want to be somebody but lack the motivation or know how to get there. I appreciated the strong girl power theme of owning your sexuality and having fulfilling female friendships in your life. I loved how it was an in your face strong poke at the transformation of Austin from a hip and quirky college town to an overpopulated, overpriced and corporatized city. I loved it as an audiobook, but definitely one for the headphones for language and sexual content, especially if you have littles around.”

The Book of Delights

By Ross Gay
Narrated by: Ross Gay
Length: 5 hours

If you enjoyed Seed to Dust, then you’ll love The Book of Delights.

“This is one of my favorite books to recommend, especially for someone looking for a gift. Poet and avid gardener Ross Gay, who also is the fantastic narrator, reflects on what delights him over the course of a year. Lyrical, humorous, philosophical and sometimes heartbreaking, these essays may be bite-sized but they will fill you up. A great way to recalibrate and appreciate our own day to day pleasures and challenges.”
