How to Invent Everything

A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler
By Ryan North
Narrated by Ryan North /  12 hours 55 minutes

How to Invent Everything

“I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. In my opinion, it is not always a good thing when an author narrates their own work, but in this instance it was spot on. What impressed me was how well he managed to describe graphs, tables, and illustrations from the written version. That said, I will admit to having skipped past a couple of tables that became tedious listening. I can only imagine how much fun he had reading them. There is humor from start to finish, and I especially enjoyed his handling of famous quotes at the beginning of each section. Since the book is a guide on how to rebuild civilization faster than it developed naturally, the reader (who is ostensibly trapped in the past due to a broken time machine, for which this book is the 'repair' manual) gets to take credit for 'discovering' and 'inventing' all the great advances in history. In keeping with this, all famous quotes are attributed to "You". This is followed by an additional 'also' accreditation to a personage from the 'original' timeline. What is also educational is that as each technological stride is explained, the author informs not only when this it first appeared, but how much sooner it COULD have based on previous advances. A 'technology tree' appendix (which is available on the author's website with all the other described visual aids) lays out exactly which technologies are necessary to take the next step on your path to becoming the most important person in history. Shortly after I finished the book, one of my children asked me several question I was able to answer as if I had always known (rather than just learned it myself 48 hours previously). This is a great resource if you've ever had a desire to know a little bit more about the 'hows' and 'whys' behind the workings of civilization”

“Elizabeth Acevedo was the perfect choice for the reader of this sensational retelling of Pride & Prejudice. Zuri Benitez absolutely comes to life through her performance. The Sisters of the Winter Wood

By Rena Rossner
Narrated by Ana Clements /  10 hours 45 minutes

The Sisters of the Winter Wood

“A magical, lush debut with fierce sisterly love at its core. Alternating chapters in both poetry and prose tell the story of Liba and Laya, two sisters that discover their family history is something straight out of a fairy tale: Liba, like her father is part bear, and Laya, like her mother is part swan. As each sister navigates their new abilities of transformation, so too must they learn how to protect each other when a mysterious group of merchants arrive in their village, selling magical fruit and spinning malicious, deadly lies. Sisters of the Winter Wood is a lush reworking of Christina Rossetti's The Goblin Market, but with deep characterization, historical details, and a magical setting, it is also utterly original. I was swept away in Rossner's book and you will be too! ”

The Winter Soldier

By Daniel Mason
Narrated by Laurence Dobiesz /  11 hours 34 minutes

The Winter Soldier

“The depth and complexity of Daniel Mason’s new three-dimensional tapestry of war and its consequences make for a remarkable read. There are the basic wartime themes of love, horror, and loss—of limbs and lives, of innocence and empire. A whole world just vanishes in bombs, guns, and smoke, and the reader is left clutching at hints, but the richness of the story makes it uplifting rather than melancholy. Everything is below the surface; you sink down, discover something new at every turn, and come away refreshed. How does that happen with a war story? Don’t ask—just read.”

Narrated by Katharine Lee McEwan /  10 hours 14 minutes

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein

“Elizabeth Lavena's life has never been easy. But when she embarks on a journey to find Victor Frankenstein it's about to get a lot darker. Clever, creepy, and enthralling this re-imagining is a beautiful homage for the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's classic tale.”

Heartland

A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth
By Sarah Smarsh
Narrated by Sarah Smarsh /  9 hours 35 minutes

Heartland

“A classic is born! Sarah Smarsh takes us on a five-generation trek through the hardscrabble life of her Kansas childhood in the ’80s and ’90s. Just as J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy and Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed addressed the uncomfortable topic of poverty in this country, Heartland successfully gives the reader an in-depth look at impoverishment in the bread basket of America. She writes with a crystal-clear and objective voice, never giving in to self-pity or malevolence. Indeed, tongue-in-cheek humor and tenderness often shine through. This book is a must-read, a milestone in the life of our country.”

Family Trust

A Novel
By Kathy Wang
Narrated by Joy Osmanski /  13 hours 43 minutes

Family Trust

““Family Trust is a novel that I did not want to end. From the start, I was completely immersed in the Huang family dynamic, complicated as most families tend to be. In one sentence you feel real sympathy for a character, and in the next you are laughing out loud. It is a true gem. From the first pages, I was completely swept in to the lives of the Huang family. I have a feeling this will be my go-to hand-sell for the fall! Those who loved The Nest and Crazy Rich Asians will eat this right up! A very well-written, highly enjoyable read.”

Foe is a tale of implacably mounting peril that feels all the more terrifying for being told in such a quiet, elegantly stripped-down voice. Iain Reid knows how to do ‘ominous’ as well as anyone I’ve ever read.” —Scott Smith, author of The Ruins and A Simple Plan

The Challenge Culture

Why the Most Successful Organizations Run on Pushback
By Nigel Travis
Narrated by Graeme Malcolm /  8 hours 39 minutes

The Challenge Culture

“Nigel Travis tells and excellent story *and* delivers actionable advice for business owners and managers. It's difficult to manage both in the same book and I was mightily impressed. A combination of autobiography and a step-by-step guide to creating a "challenge culture" in one's business, I found much inspiration and practical advice here. Travis uses examples from his past (Papa John's and Blockbuster) both good and bad to illustrate how he came to see that the best way to run a company is to trust everyone in the company, from the lowest paid to the highest, to come up with great ideas and to give them a space to do it. I learned a lot from this book and am finding it very useful even in my tiny company and in my life in general. It is also a great read because Travis has read so many business and psychology books (I have read many of the same as he) that he has distilled the best points of many into this book so you don't have to read all the rest of them! I listened to this book on audio. He reads the introduction. He is English and it's good to hear his voice and his passion. The book itself is read by Graeme Malcolm, an exceptional narrator, also English. He really captures the compassion, creativity, and zeal expressed by Travis in the text. Highly recommended!”
