Né le 7 janvier 1932 à Nice, Max Gallo est un romancier, essayiste, historien et homme politique français d'origine italienne. Il est membre de l'Académie française depuis le 31 mai 2007. Ses premiers romans, qu'il appelle des ouvrages de « politique-fiction », ont été écrits sous le pseudonyme de Max Laugham. Il a adopté un style littéraire qu'il appelle des « romans-Histoire », en travaillant avec les ressources historiques et en complétant son écriture de façon romanesque en y ajoutant son expérience personnelle et ses sentiments. Depuis 1994, il n'exerce plus de fonction politique.
